I recently moved from mostly C# to mostly VB.NET but I don't think I am (statistically) significant.

There can be no other explanation. You bear the blame

Yay - I look forward to a similar result in the "people cycling to work" and "people eating rice" surveys as I did both of those today too.

It wouldn't be hard to convince me that one developer switching from C# to VB.NET is statistically significant!
I don't expect there are that many of those.
|
|
|
|

I'll offset that. I went to just about all C# from VB.NET.
It doesn't matter to me. I make money writing code no matter what language is specified.

To be honest I am pretty much polyglot - although I do have to look up the different syntax for generics and interfaces... but VB.Net has improved since I was last here.

Well, I suppose this will get the anti-VB zealots going.

Joining an open-source community isn't required to land a development job, but it could help Do stuff for free to do stuff for pay

I don't know who these hiring managers are. But if I get a candidate that talks up open-source involvement my first reaction is... "so?"

I can see that if it's used as a way to vet someone's work. See if you like the way they do things and you can also see if they know what they say they do.

See, even if it were to be used as a sort of 'portfolio' I wouldn't know if they were really the ones who did the work. (Decades of people lying in interviews have made me awfully cynical.)

Right on, brother.
The guy I replaced here was some indiot who had someone else do his phone interview.
|
|
|
|

Ever interview one over the phone who has a room full of helpers that he repeats the question to, who then go googling?
It's ridiculous.
The second time I just started asking OUTLANDISH crap to see what they'd say.
Pathetic.

I haven't heard of that happening until now but will be on the lookout for it in the future.

The repeat out loud of the question (for them to start researching) and the dramatic pause are easy to hear once you start listening for them.
"So what you're asking me is..." etc.

I'd think it the potential cheatability would depend on what the record shown was.
Little/unknown project with the candidate as the primary/only submitter would raise a red flag.
Claiming to own an inactive account with a pseudonym and being unable to prove ownership of the code because 'I don't have that email address anymore' zillions of red flags.
On the other hand an account that's been active for an extended period of time on a project with 3rd party use and multiple devs (not a sham project/copy pasta fraud), with the account linked to the candidates email (not claiming to be someone else) seems like it'd be a reasonable indicator of what the person can do.

Heck, I don't join OS projects. I create OS projects.
Oh, and should I mention 160 articles?

I wish it were that easy. Sadly, contributing to Code Project, having a couple community oriented websites, etc., it's like talking to a wall with most recruiters, except you don't even hear the faint echo of your own voice. Black hole is more like it. It's really weird, like they can't think outside of the box of questions that they have.

A “massive and concerted attack” has been launched by a bot system on numerous bitcoin exchanges, leading to popular exchange Bitstamp putting a temporary halt on all bitcoin withdrawals.
Keep a close eye on those Bitcoin wallet apps. There be pickpockets afoot...
