On Tuesday, eBay Inc. announced it was splitting up into two companies—its eBay marketplaces unit and PayPal, its faster-growing payments unit. Must have been a dispute over the currency exchange fees

Must have been an EU influence, ja?

Something is brewing in the world of application development. Developers are pushing the idea of a thick/fat/rich application to the point where the client is completely in the driver’s seat and building a custom back-end is an unnecessary, if not an obsolete, endeavor. It's all about U and I

The welcome return of Microsoft Access. Yay*

I have had enough of these stupid wuck-fads coming up with new stupid ideas. If you have ever tried to deploy a fat feature rich client, you'll know the nightmare.
Put things where they belong - UI/UX goes in the front, calculation and data management goes in the back. Easy as bitch-slapping a hipster with lead-lined iPad case!

I never left that world
I've gone from being obsolete to cutting edge

It may be the exact same application; it's all in where they draw the line.

Over the next 72 hours, we will roll out the new MSN to the more than 425 million people in over 50 countries around the world that come to the site each month. The 'home page for people who can't change their home page' improves

Its been apparent that both Microsoft and Apple have been moving this direction and maybe even Google if you have a decent imagination and like rumors.
1) I'm not sold that the consumer is really ready for this yet (if they ever will be).
2) I'm equally not sold that the hardware is ready for this.

Oracle has overhauled the way it will build user interfaces in a bid to meet customers' expectations for user-friendly mobile applications. Because when you hear 'Oracle', you think 'next-generation user interface'!
|
|
|
|
|
If desired, developers can then use Oracle's more robust tools to enhance the apps created by business users, Oracle said.
That says it all.
This quote though:
The goal with Alta is user interfaces that can adapt to various device types and screen resolutions while giving users a consistent experience.
oh, how I must refrain from making a comment about "consistent experience" with various "device types" and "screen resolutions"...must stop...

Marc Clifton wrote: screen resolutions Does it mean they will support both resolutions of 25 lines with 40 characters each and 25 lines with 80 characters each? Oh that's really modern development!

The clear focus of this year’s JavaOne, going on this week in San Francisco, is the community around Java and the state of the platform. To this end, Patrick Curran, chair of the Java Community Process, described a number of initiatives ongoing within the JCP, which he hopes will open the group to more participation from the community at large. Seems like they have a lot of work to do

A prototype of MySQL 5.7 is shipping with an optional component called the MySQL HTTP Plugin. This plugin allows direct access to MySQL via a REST over HTTP interface, eliminating the need for a middle-tier server or database specific drivers. Because... someone requested this?

Oh great, now we can send gigabytes of data on the URL and the response string in the second most bulky format ever invented, JSON (The first being XML).

The first iteration made use of all these "cool" technologies like the MySQL HTTP API. We didn't even need to hire a middleware developer. The HTTP Guru Developers could directly address the DB from jQuery. This is the best invention EVER!
One developer generation later... We have a new way of doing things. We have added some middleware code that now uses a native connection to the DB. This have sped up our application by a factor of 10. This is the best invention EVER!

Microsoft’s Windows announcement is underway and Windows 10 is being unveiled. Out of some of the more exciting features unveiled, Microsoft proceeded to demo a feature that doesn’t usually get any attention during events like these; the good ‘ol Windows Command Prompt! Forget the touch stuff, this is what I'm looking forward to
