Even when users reinstalled a clean version of Windows on some Lenovo devices, the software would still reappear. But I'm sure it was really valuable software

To note: they are using an "BIOS API" specifically designed for that. See "Windows Platform Binary Table"[^].
Some shill wrote: A rich set of tools exist to aid Windows provisioning, ranging from driver injection and offline registry management to sysprep imaging tools. However, there is a small set of software where the tools are not enough. The software is absolutely critical for the execution of Windows but for one reason or another, the vendor is unable to distribute the software to every provisioning entity.
Lately, Micosoft slapped on some "security requirements", including
The authenticated device owner should have the ability to disable or remove this functionality if desired. Note that device owner in this case could mean that it’s not the user that is using the device. For example in a corporate environment the owner maybe the IT admin but not the end user using the device.
Yeah, right.... "should".

Which is sad, as I like their machines. I guess I'm back to Asus for my next one. (which isn't really a problem as I like their stuff too)

A friend bought a Lenovo Yoga 3...what a PITA it was to get rid of that malware. The thing hasn't worked right from day one. Lenovo is on my black list, bigtime.

I have a Yoga 2. Will be my last. Not mentioned in the current list but was a possibility in the Superfish scandal. I think mine was early enough to miss it and it appeared to pass all the various tests. And I've not noticed anything unusual since. But it doesn't leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Yeah, that was it...'Superfish'...creepy and unsettling, to be sure. There's a lot of that these days.

It's possible that you have never written a bad line of code. Possible, but unlikely in the extreme. Just start over from scratch. You'll get it right next time.

if (variable.equals("literal")) { ... }
if ("literal".equals(variable)) { ... }
IMO code like this hides real bugs, I'd much rather get a null exception and figure out why the variable is NULL instead of been fooled into thinking evreything is working because it didn't crash.

What does the rise of containers mean to software engineers? To answer this question, here's a guide for leveraging software containers for those charged with application development, focused on what's important. For those of us (but definitely not me) who don't understand Docker et al

Each of us uses COBOL ten times a day without knowing. What are the costs of retiring the language? Maintaining the perfect record of "headlines that ask a question"

I learned COBOL in school...was thinking of brushing up on it as it sounds like COBOL programmers are in demand
...some people hate it but I don't mind it...it makes me feel nostalgic for the old days.

COBOL will NEVER go away, there's just waaaay to much code written in it. Every time you buy food at the supermarket, every time you withdraw money from your account, every time you take a book out from a library etc etc. COBOL is ubiquitous and it's here to stay.

The libraries I know around my place don't use COBOL anymore, but they have books about COBOL.

That's probably good enough
