Apparently, companies have made their own modifications and/or config templates, but have not committed them. That ain't playing the game -- or not the right game, at any rate.

Sure, there's bound to be an element of that, but consider if you had spent months and years of your life creating something foer everyone to use fairly and equitably, and then someone else had come along and made a fortune out of it without so much as a nod of the head in your direction.

I know I'd be a tad pissed of about it, so I think they're entitled to a few sour grapes -- and it's not as if they've gone over the top about it.
