The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday gave the go-ahead for a lawsuit by consumers accusing Apple Inc of monopolizing the market for iPhone software applications and forcing them to overpay, rejecting the company’s bid to escape claims that its practices violate federal antitrust law. A store that everyone* has to sell from, and everyone* has to buy from might be a monopoly?

I hate "app stores".

If they are not thoroughly vetting apps, if they are actively removing products which offend Apple's sensibilities, if they make "side-loading" or other app sources difficult or impossible, then yeah, have fun in court.

On the other hand, if a user should happen to download an app from somewhere else and then have a virus or other malware on their phone from that download; they would hold Apple liable for not protecting them in the first place.

The entire issue sounds like dirty politics against Apple; consumers don't file anti-trust lawsuits to make 99-cent apps cheaper.
I'm wondering what the lawsuit's real purpose is.

It's a good question. Normally I'd point at "the usual suspects" (aka competitors), but here that would mean Google, and they also want to keep everyone at their store.
I wonder if it's some of the bigger app writers, who want to get out from under Apple's 30%?

Google actually make it quite easy to sideload apps, which means their practices are quite different to Apple. Further, other vendors can use AOSP and create custom Android distributions, with their own app stores. The entire model is freer, with all the benefits and risks that entails.

It's funny, but it's true too! All we can think is, when will PHP go away?
I guess when it is replaced with Django running on Python.

Have you ever wondered how one of the largest software companies worldwide ensures high-quality code through code reviewing? They happen *after* shipping, right?

So, essentially, ms devs spend half their time on code reviews, and zero time on fixing bugs.

Hey all, a young (teenager) friend of mine wants to get into learning how to do animation and digital art. She'll be using Windows 10 Pro. Don't worry about hardware, that's taken care of.
But the question is, what software would you recommend for that? Free is of course great, but I want to consider all the options. I think the main thing to consider is what would provide a good learning experience and also (if possible) to grow into the full capabilities of the software.
Thanks!

Mainly for 2D Animation.
Not cheap.
I used to work there (15 years ago) , not certain what amount of code I write is still in there (looking at the video, I think all traces of me were erased ).

Looks interesting -- thanks! I'll pass it along.
Yeah, 15 years is a long time for code to linger.

Blender is becoming a powerhouse for 3D and animation, although it isn't yet widely accepted in the industry. It is free. Some examples from it: blender shorts

Animation can mean a lot of things.
Assuming she'd want transitions between consecutive photos/videos, I could add this one to the mix : Phot-Awe[^] (disclaimer: it's made by me).
About GIMP - not sure if that would work for animations, but it's definitely an awesome free tool for editing photos - I've used it quite a bit myself.
