when you're running millions of servers even increasing power consumption by 1% for encryption costs real money.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
--Zachris Topelius

There you go - one of many things I wouldn't have thought of.
Which makes me again wish those barges were going to be floating data centers. Having their butts sitting on ocean water may have been a nice passive cooling strategy. Of course, you'd still have to get the fibre over to the mainland.

It was fun not knowing, but today Google took the mystery away from exactly what it’s doing on a barge in San Francisco Bay, and another floating in Portland, Maine. I was holding out hope that it would be a pirate ship

Microsoft is not new to the concept of donating software for those in need; every year, the company uses DreamSpark, BizSpark, and their team devoted to “corporate citizenship” to donate software and services around the world to those in need. Microsoft has also been noted to donate to nonprofits and have kept Office 365 free of charge to those who qualify. Now, the team up in Redmond will be adding Windows 8.1 to that list. Well, that's one way to get people using it
Bravo for good corporate citizenship.

As the old saying goes, when they start insulting you, you’re obviously doing something right. And judging by the comments being thrown Google’s way by Microsoft about Gmail, it’s pretty obvious that Redmond is worried. He’s worried enough about Gmail to build a new website and start a public smear campaign. "Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win."
For those who think Google's the only NSA-conduit, I think you're just fooling yourselves.

If you can't beat them, drug them to the mud? Sad, that Microsoft spend's it time and money on this kind of things.
I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is (V).

Aristotle first noticed that hot water freezes faster than cold, but chemists have always struggled to explain the paradox. Until now. We can now rest a little more easily

I would put this down to convectional currents that are already in place and have momentum, while the hot water is cooling down just after being heated. It is logical to assume it is easier to generate moment when the difference in temp. between the 2 parts ( Water and air) are greater.. This is my theory anyway lol..

Sounds like yours is a poor-mans summary of Xi's theory.
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.-John Q. Adams You must accept one of two basic premises: Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not alone in the universe. And either way, the implications are staggering.-Wernher von Braun Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.-Albert Einstein

It's certainly not the first, but Apple is the latest major consumer tech company to release a report outlining the requests it receives from governments around the world seeking information on its users. Apple's document includes requests from all countries and covers a period ranging from January 1st to June 30th of this year.
