The DBA has traditionally been the person in charge of strategies, optimization, capacity planning and security for databases that store and supply information to a given application. However, it occurred to me that the role of the DBA has changed dramatically in the last few years, with a lot more changes to come. Long live the DBA!

Vegas can be quite tempting (and dangerous if that documentary "Casino" was accurate)

The DBA has a massive task that's only gotten more involved over the last decade or so.
This reminds me of something I heard one of my programming heroes say back in '06 (might've been 07.)
"We're all going to be programming in Ruby in 5 years anyway."
I asked if he minded if I quoted him on that. He said "If you feel you must."
I thought I was being a little snarky at the time. But now? I'm pretty glad I asked.

Software may be eating the world, as Marc Andreessen posits, but open-source software seems to be eating itself. And at a far faster clip. While the software world has grown used to products and their vendors dominating for long stretches (think: Microsoft in operating systems and Oracle in databases), the new world of open source is moving at an accelerated, Darwinian pace, leaving no project to rest on its laurels. "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get."

Development for multiple devices has its challenges, but there are also possibilities which aren’t typically available on desktop PCs. Consider the vibration mechanism; it’s a simple tactile feedback device which can alert you of new messages or phone calls. It’s especially useful in a noisy environment where sound cannot be heard or quiet places where it would be a distraction. "Don't ask, don't tell"

Give's a new meaning to "vibrator".

Valve, the online software distribution company, is shipping 300 prototype Steam Machines to beta testers on Friday. The lucky few hundred will receive both Steam's hardware and SteamOS, its Linux-based software for video games, for testing, as the company pushes to establish an open-source gaming platform. Will it fix the "catastrophe"?

Hmm, I don't see much use for running SteamOS on a normal PC, because I could just install Steam and have exactly the same thing.

I'm assuming that it might be useful as a dedicated machine at some point. Also, there would be a theoretical performance improvement in just having one OS before your game.

Nokia's largest manufacturing center and a key piece of Microsoft's devices and services deal, is frozen along with Nokia's other Indian assets and unable to be transferred to Microsoft. The Indian government is awaiting payment on up to $3.4 billion from Nokia in taxes and penalties dating back to 2006.
