Windows 8.1 Update 1 may be headed for a March 2014 release and could include some under-the-hood changes to reduce memory and disk space requirements for cheaper tablets. Save the date, host an install party!

So when I buy a 64GB tablet I actually get something close to 64GB of space I can use?
Or am I just being silly?

You get something closer to 64 GB of space. But that won't help for long because ya know, Updates 'n' Stuff.

It's the same with other OS's tablets and even desktops! For instance, my ASUS Transformer Prime 32gb Tablet has only 27gb available because of all the space used by the OS and the preinstalled apps.
That 1TB drive is reduced in size with the install of the OS and other software.

Wow and my desktop storage is reduced by 200gb or more when I install windows and a few applications

If your desktop shipped with 64% of its total capacity used by the OS and a couple bundled applications you would think differently.
But we already know this - you're just being difficult.

I'm not seeing a problem here. A tablet is not used like a desktop. That's my point.

Except that is not how Microsoft is marketing the Surface Pro. They market it as a full blown (albeit small form factor) PC that can run all your Windows apps and peripherals.

Sure, understood. But do people really expect to install every app on a 32gb system? Or even a 64gb system?
Other tablet manufacturers also advertise with xGB of storage and it's not really "true" since some of it is taken up by the OS and preinstalled apps.
I get that it's worse with the Surface Pro & windows 8. That's partly do to the "recovery" partition that W8 makes.
Anyway, I don't really understand all the griping, especially when you get the same issue on a "desktop" with an SSD that is 32gb or 64gb in size.

What if, however, your desktop operating system was infecting your Android device without you knowing? Sadly, this can happen, as some Windows users are finding out. Symantec announces it has found such a case, and it is really nasty. In its fiscal second-quarter earnings release today, Microsoft said Surface revenue was $893 million during the final quarter of calendar year 2013, up from $400 million in the preceding quarter. It didn’t, however, provide information on the number of units sold and it did cost the company $932 million to generate the Surface revenue. "Sometimes dead is better."

The point to take from this is that Surface and Windows 8/8.1 are gaining traction.

Linux is irrelevant to Valerie's needs. Not because it can't fill them, but because it forces her to conform to Linux, rather than having it conform to her needs.
But wait. Linux is open source, so of course she can make Linux conform to her needs!

Tech people will use Linux because "the know how to make it conform to their needs". But lay-people will be more inclined to use mainstream operating systems because they already know how to use them.

Geeks will use Linux...
I'm a tech person, and I want the OS to stay as much out of the way as possible. And that is definitely not the experience I have with Linux, nor with W8.
