Maybe it has more access to the Windows box? I've never become interested enough to care to figure out either. If they wanted to switch to Linux, why not create a full distro of their own?

Running Linux in a VM will always be a better idea. Do you really want to take a chance on MS screwing up WSL during an update, or waiting until THEY decide the kernel needs to be updated? IMHO, that's a blatantly BAD idea, almost as bad as using Visual Basic beyond the 3rd grade.

I suspect that the two of you are right.
Also that having Linux playing too close to the various Windows API seems like it's just asking for security leakage. Having the isolation of a VM feels safer to me.

I'll always take a Linux VM (4gb of RAM and minimal disk space, depending on the distro of course) over MS's idea of what Linux should be like.
