In spite of the various downsides, most employees still enjoy working remotely and would be more than happy to make a few compromises in order to remain remote. "Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles I'm feeling very still"
I placed my vote on that one years ago

It's called Amazon Sidewalk, and the company touts it as a way to help its devices work better, by extending the range of low-bandwidth devices to help them stay online.
It does that by pooling neighbors' Wi-Fi to help connectivity for devices that are out of range. Of course... they are just doing everything for you...

Oooo ... that's nasty. What if the WiFi is coming from a local hotspot using mobile data? 500MB/month is still 0.5GB, and until recently that's 1/6th of my "free allowance".
And while I can restrict what apps on my phone can use the internet I can't do that with my PC if it's connected to my phone via a hotspot (which I do when I'm mobile as I can't be arsed to move the SIM between the two devices).
I'd be well annoyed if an Echo started using my data and "pushed me over the edge" as it gets expensive very quickly!

This is obviously designed for a world in which data connections are "too cheap to meter". In the real world, I pay for my data connection. Should I have a poor connection in a particular place in the house, I would run a network cable to the location, use Ethernet-over-power, or use a Wi-Fi booster. This isn't rocket science.
This is aside from issues like someone performing illegal actions using my Wi-Fi connection, which might have serious legal repercussions for me!

When coding in the new Visual Studio 2019 v16.10, IntelliCode will now scan your project to suggest handy NuGet packages for you, saving the time and hassle of finding just the right helpers on your own. So it just suggests the latest Adam Sandler code all the time?

a.k.a. People donwloading this also downloaded that?
Or like Amazon... showing you packages that does the same as the one you already installed (meaning, totally useless after that)

To be fair: Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Oracle, SAP, etc also are very good at doing that as well.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

But of course, it depends.

No one (this is a very slight exaggeration) is in a software business. They're in the business associated with the end product that happens to contain software. Most of them see their software team as a cost center. Those running The Business are the ones rewarded with high pay and bonuses, and there is little understanding of the importance of software design excellence, let alone how to achieve it.
Microsoft? People working on Office are in the office productivity business, not the software business. I would say that the only exceptions are those who sell software that others then use to also make software.
