No I am not being sarcastic. It's a temporary dose of dopamine every year.
While most of the time they mind their own business, create a little mess which I don't really mind, and I get to play with them when I want. And as they start to get too energetic the mama cat takes them away. 
The disappointment of not being able to get a dog is also real, I like both cats and dogs.

Ah, thank you for clarifying that. Having 11 cats living in my house when I was a kid was an interesting experience. We took in a stray cat from a neighbor, and it multiplied from there. I had a favorite cat, but he would escape the house and go who-knows-where for a day or more before returning for food.

The dog smell is very off putting to me too. Ugh.
There was only one dog that didn't smell like that that I've encountered and it's because its human bathed it twice a week.

A smelly dog has a neglectful owner.
And it's actually easier to give a dog a bath than a cat. Although it's always more entertaining to watch someone try to wash a cat.

Having had both, I know now I prefer dogs.The cat ... well, anyone who saw my comment to charlie about biscuits and gravy will understand.
The current dog is a mix. Border collie (pretty smart, gets bored easily), whippet (fast), husky (obstinate, high endurance, no recall). It's an interesting combination of character traits. She is very affectionate, though, loves to jump up for a hug. And being part husky, very "operatic".

Wow, I just learned about it. No announcement was made, so I almost missed it, weren't it for the Lounge post a few pages below.
This is a weird feeling, I am not even sure how to describe it : I've been here for the last 23 years, followed since the beginning, so I think this website and the community around it was a small but nonetheless part of my life. Sure, CodeProject is not down, but Chris leaving is quite a news.

It's been in the pipeline for long enough that we've started attempts at cloning him.
The results have been, well encouraging but ... not user facing.
Failing that, there's always the possibility of androids.

I can only speculate and wouldn't presume to put words into anyone's mouth. I'm only curious about what the contingency plan might be - if there is one at all.
I think the CP community is doing a good enough job on its own moderating this and other forums. If CP is just left to run on its own, I'm absolutely fine with that, but then the question becomes what happens when the next backend problem comes up - CP does disappear for a few hours here and there, and if there's nobody around to diagnose and fix any problem that goes beyond "reboot the server", what then...those are not problems "us mere users" can fix.
Besides, there's still infrastructure to pay for, so it's not like a site like this can simply be left to run unattended for any prolonged period of time.

I am not aware of alternatives. Not to CP at least. In all honesty Chris' hand was very light on the forum, it has been mostly self-moderated, the last direct incisive action was the closing of the Soapbox and the Backroom.
As for the back end, as long as there is someone to keep it alive it will work fine.

I'm just hearing of this.  And to be honest I'm happy for him. It's safe to say that over the past couple of decades, he and I chatted a few times or two on and off of CP. So, Chris feels more like a friend than a "CP guy".
Speaking as someone who let his health go (me), if you don't have your health then you have nothing. If you don't go outside and get some vitamin D, you don't have health, etc. So, it's bitter sweet, but if he knows it's time to work on other areas in life then it's a pivotal moment for him and he'll come out all the better for it.
Not sure if he'll still lurk the boards, but on the off chance he sees this, Chris just wanna let you know buddy that it's been a privilege annoying you all these years.  You've always been so patient and friendly with everyone and gave a lot back to the community. And, nobody has used the old CodeGuru since CP started.
Here's to you conquering your next goals in life man. (insert meditation emoji here)

completely agree with you. Ask a question, and you'll get 14 comments and 5 arguments about how the question has already been answered and why it hasn't. It's like having an entire conference room full of women dealing with "that time" of the month or pre-menopause.
Don't jump my case, I've gone through six daughters and one wife I've been married to for 46 years. I know what I'm talking about. It's okay, but I think the analogy fits to SO.

Yeah I found out from linked in. I learned to program on Code project, in 1999I bought books then asked questions here as I started with MFC (remember that?) . I worked for CP for a good year I think, early in my move to working from home for overseas companies. I drifted away from CP over time, I don't have questions any more and the questions here got ridiculous. But I still have a soft spot for the place
