I need to execute a little utility on startup (which would not be a problem, as I could easily put a shortcut in tha startup-item folder) and on shutdown or logout. also I want the app to be executed once per day if the computer is not shut down. how do I do this?

In order to run the program during that you start, it could do in many possible way. But I recommend you to use task schedule[^], in order to set the time to run during the computer start or schedule the task to run at the specific time.
And in order to run the task during the computer is shutting down, try to assign the shutdown script[^] for your computer.

Hi
I'm looking for a programmed way to sample / measure the
resource consumption (Memory,CPU,I/O etc...) of a running Windows process.
This should act much like the simple UNIX call to getrusage() applied on
the current calling process.
Any ideas, suggestions...?
"C" based code sample would be mostly welcomed.
Thanx
Hillel.

Hello,
I am trying to make a small OS as a hobby. But I am not sure how can I code / use (and which one) a bootloader that transfers control over to my kernel. Can anyone guide me / suggest a simple bootloader with an example of kernel control handover ?
Thanks
Ashish

also, check out grub and lilo, the linux bootloaders. since they're open source, you can look at their code, and probably get advice from their authors too.

Hi,
You are confusing between boot-loader & OS.
(1) Bootloader is the initial stage program which will ultimately load final OS. It is of fixed size(512 bytes). But if your boot-loader goes beyond this size you can cut this in pieces leaving the intent of bootloader intact. Boot -loader is basically written in assembly(8086 or higher).
(2) Os is....you know what it is.
So once you power ON your system; it will perform normal BIOS routines & then cheks for boot sequence. According to boot sequence it will verify first sector (512 bytes)for validity & if it is valid it will load that sector in RAM. And later pass control to it. Here starts the job of boot-loader which should take care of loading all imp files reqd for loading OS ultimately.
if you have more doubts feel free to contact me.

Hello,
I'm writing for a misterious event happening at our company's windows 2003 sbs server, it keeps shutting down by itself on approximately every 1h and 40mins a kind of force shut down with no reason which seriously troubles most of our client server specialized software hosted on the server,
from the Event viewer I get this message
Event ID: 513 (0x0201)
Type: Success Audit
Description: Windows NT is shutting down.
All logon sessions will be terminated by this shutdown.
My question is, what is causing this forced shut down of the server, and how to avoid it
Thanks for your time and attention, any advice on fixing the problem is appreciated!

I never use windows server 2003 but I have some experience in windows 2000. Try to check:
1. Try to check the Task schedule, there any task that assign to shutdown the computer after log on to windows.
2. Check the logon script, did you specifies the logon script to manage the computer to be shutdown after log on.
3. Try to use any virus tool to scan for the virus. Because in windows 2000 or windows xp pro, when it attack by virus blaster it will shutdown the computer and restart in every one minute. To avoid this you need to search for the specific cleaning tool (I use norton fix tool at that time) to clean the virus. Or you can check the windows registry, for the start application, to see which service or application that you might identify as the virus.
4. Check the status of the service, and try to identify the function of each service. There is might be a service that cause the problem to your server and try to stop it.
Good luck!!!

Hi, I just install windows 98 for the PC at my home. After I install it, i notes that the command "Install new fonts " from the font director of windows is not appear on the File menu. Normally in windows 98 when we browse to the font folder, the content of the folder have to change in order to make it suitable with font task (such as install font, sort...). But when I browse to the the font folder, it display as the normal folder. Does anyone know how to solve the problem???

Sometimes the DESKTOP.INI file which controls how the fonts folder behaves can get deleted or become corrupted. TweakUI[^] can fix this problem - go to the Repair tab.
If this has happened I suggest checking the hard disk is OK. Windows 98 doesn't have a transactional filesystem, so power failures can sometimes cause disk corruption.
Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

There are might be many problem or area that you need to check about this systme:
1. Try to test a new connection whether it could connect successfully or not.
2. Make sure the user name and password is correct.
3. An IP address of the connection point to the server is wrong.
4. Make sure that the device driver of modem or network card is enable or install correctly.

You can replace (or at least you could as recent as Windows NT) the windows shell interface. Instead of using explorer.exe you could replace it with any other exe.

Hi :
only by replace the shell value in the follwing registry key your program will run instead of explorer.exe
replace you program full path in the explorer.exe place in the shell value .
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
to restart windows or shutdown when your program close
.
when your program quered to closed
only invok ExitWindowsEx(....) API function .

I am accessing DB using System.Data.IdbConnection class (C#)
On one opening and closing of the Database connection the resources are not being release properly- if run by double-clicking the executable on the explorer.
But if run thru MS Studio, the Handles are properly returned back when the connection is closed.

It is impossible to do that. If you are an administrator, you would be able to do it by disable the user account. But if you have a power user right, you would be able to disable only the account that you create.
