Excellent that worked brilliantly. Just have to set the height and width and visibility, as I was having a problem that the rest of the items below the ascx page (static data/GUI) do not move down when you set the visibility to visible.
It seems to place is over the top of the items currently on the page, instead of moving them down.
We will have to set the height depending on the size of the DIV that we set up for each control.
Is there any way of getting the height of the DIV tag as a variable and just increasing the height based on the height of the div that should be visible. IE: can you get the div's height value at run time from the client side script, and when setting the visibility, setting the height also?
Thanks for the help

Dear CPians,
Has anyone ever come up with any problems related to Sessions in IIS or with Macromedia Communication Server when the client accessing the website uses toolbar addin such as the Google bar or the MSN Toolbar?
I think that there is an issue with Macromedia Communication server and I am wondering wether there is a problem with IIS too.
My experince shows that when using MSN Toolbar or Google Bar and accessing a Flash that communicates with the communication server, the connection on server will never close even when the browser is closed and the pc rebooted. This does not happen when the toolbar addin is disabled.
Today, I noticed some abnormal session handling by IIS on another website and thought that it could be the same problem as the one above.
What I am asking is if anyone has noticed any problems like this. It might be my code, but so far I have been through alot of debuging and haven't found the flaw, so I started wondering if there is a more general problem. I have googled the problem but no related links came up.
Any hint, help, idea is wellcomed!
Thanking you in advance.

Here's my scenario:
I want to run some sort of game engine on a server so that clients can:
- get a list of the games already running on the server
- join one of these games
- interact with the game
The idea is for the games to be multi-player and operate on asp.net pages. If a user refreshes his client, he can see the changes to the game caused by other players. I've already designed the necessary classes for game play, but I'm a little unsure how to have the games running constantly on the server. Would I use a WebService? Should I take the remoting route to solve this? I doubt I can run a console app on the server, since I will not be hosting this on my own server.
I don't consider myself a .NET newbie, but I think I'm missing a few key ideals that it takes to implement such a project.
Thanks for any constructive advice!

Hi M,
I had a same kind of issue when i was writing a chat application. I ended up using iframe and javascript as i was not refreshing iframe with any parameters. In your case you can use iframe or use webservices from javascript and it should fine.
Thanks

Thanks for your response Manoj...
Refreshing the page isn't really my problem though; it's bigger than that.
I need to know how to keep some sort of application running on the server that instantiates some objects and is able to share those objects with clients.

One of the ways i can think you can solve the issue is using web services as you can share some global variables between your webapp and webservices

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but my question covers many areas. Firstly I am VERY new to C#, ASP.NET, so please tell me if I am going about this the wrong way!
I am having to develop an intranet site for the College where I work. This has to be done quickly so I have used FrontPage to get me going - ok, so far so good. We have to have a lot of reports (currently paper-based) available on the intranet, either as HTML pages or in Snapshop format. These reports come from Access and Oracle Discoverer. Additionally, I have some C# routines which are invoked from the relevant intranet pages producing information which could not necessarily be produced in a straight report - these are ok.
The problem I have is that I want users to be able to click a report title on the intranet page so that it does NOT just display the report content that we may have previously saved in html format, but actually invokes Access to run the report there and then.
I have managed to write a Console Application in C# which fires up Access, supplies it with the data base path and the name of the report to run. This works well from a command line interface. The BIG question is now, "How can I get the same thing to happen from HTML?" Probably because of my lack of experience, I cannot see how I can invoke the C# Console application, passing it parameters, from the html page.
Can anyone put me out of my misery?
Many thanks
Keith

I have a couple of webservicees that we deploy on various servers. They work fine on everything but 2003. I have had to give the ASP.NET user permissions to the install directories in order for log files to be read and written, but other than that, they seem to work fine. Well, on the 2003 install it gave us a 401 permission denied error, along with some errors about trying to read and write log files, once again, permission errors. We attempted to give ASP.NET and the iis_wpg rights to the folders and still no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Ryan

Hello
I want to ask if there is a way to change the source of <embed /> tag in html throught
java script. I have added sound to a web page and after clicking on an image I need
to change the playing track (wav or mp3) but I don't want to use <object> tag because of
compatibility with other browsers.
I just need a sample function and I don't know how correctly define the object's 'name' or 'id'
f.e.:
<embed name="audio1" src="sound/01.wav" ...="" />
or
<embed id="audio1" src="sound/01.wav" ...="" />
?
So how can I access this object in a function?
thanx a lot

What the heck is it...and how do I make one???
I have the following code:
$headers_client .= "Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary=\"{".$mime_boundary."}\"\n\n";
But the variable $mime_boundary has been left un-initialized and is never set anywhere in code?
What does this variable do...actually what the heck is mime_boundary ???
It's frustrating being a genius and living the life of a moron!!!

I don't know, but it looks like boundaries are used to mark parts of message for User Agent...
check Sample MIME Message[^].
I think these are here for compatibility or something. To answer your question how to make one.. hmm try it like they do it on MSDN...
maybe like
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;
boundary="boundary text"
and then
$mime_boundary = "--boundary text"
?
hope it helps.

Apparently not (just tried IE6).
You can just replace it with a new element:
function evolve()
{
var obj = document.getElementById("MyInput");
var newObj;
newObj = document.createElement("input");
newObj.type = "text";
newObj.id = "MyInput";
obj.parentNode.replaceChild(newObj,obj);
}
From a coding design point of view, it is probably better to just put 2 input controls on the page and hide/show the one you need. It can introduce errors if some code is expecting one type of input control, but receives another because it has morphed into something else.

How to get the input text field value by the form name? I am trying to call a function which calculates by taking the input text value times some value. I tried to get the input text value by form.the field name * 100 .
But when i run the program i have javascript error saying form.the input field value is null and not an object.
Can anyone let me know how should i get the value of the input text field?
Thanks,
angel

It looks like you are pointing to the input text object and not its value. Try something like document.formname.textboxname.value where formname and textbox name are the names of your form and text box. The value keyword points to the data typed in the box.

Hi there,
i'm again in trouble. Great trouble.
I have a WebUserControl written by me, in which all control rendered are dynamically generated on page_Load. It works well, so I've decided to extend it with another WebUserControl.
Public class ExtendedUserControl:MyUserControl
This mean that in this second page_load, a just-generated control is added in a collection before one of the inheriteds. It seems to work, but here begin my trouble.
I've done my WebForm for test, and the control extended is well-rendered. The problem is with the PostBack and ViewState : first it shows to me a message of Invalid_Viewstate.
I've tried to manage it by overloading SavePageStateToPersistenceMedium and LoadPageStateFromPersistenceMedium and make the __ViewState variable to be divided in packages lesser then 1024byte.
It then shows me an error of Invalid Cast in the private System.Web.UI.Page.LoadPageViewState() where I cannot either debug or do some.
It is clear the problem is with the viewState because making those methods to do nothing, the problem disappears. But the state, obviously, also was lost.
I need state functionality (as always in web form) and I don't like to go the ancient way to manage myself the state-infos. I think I don't know state-lore enought to understand what is really at work here. Should I have designed in another manner my WebUserControls? You know i don't go the common way to have the tags in aspx and the code in aspx.cs: I choose to make all in the .aspx.cs file so I can inherit from.
Are there some triks I wasn't able to find in the web? Or perhaps there are some requirement i don't know, and so don't meet?
Any help is quite appretiated and very welcome.
Parsiphal
