Hi everybody,
I am now struggling around with a really big problem this whole week. Let me explain you what I want to achieve (which, at least, sounds simple):
I am writing a user control which is much like a TabControl. I have a tab header with several items etc. etc. The tab items are stored in a class which is derived from CollectionBase. I also can edit it well with the VS.net IDE (pressing the .. button and adding new items works well, they also show up in the header), but the problem is that the IDE doesn't store the items in the collection. They last there until compilation - then they're gone.
So this is my problem - how can I make this collection persistent, so that the IDE adds the proper code to the InitializeComponents function?
Furthermore, is there a way that I can change the tab by clicking on it during design-time? Like you can do with the normal TabControl... overriding OnClick or adding an event handler for Click doesn't do the job.
I really need help with these problems (ASAP... I need the solution on monday).

You need to look into creating a "Designer" for your control.

How do I get Javascript in to a .NET page? What I have is an asp:Hyperlink control as part of a ItemTemplate for a DataGrid control. I want the hyperlink to use the javascript 'confirm' method to determine whether or not to delete a record, but I can't figure out how to get the javascript to spit out. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Here's the HTML, if interested:
<body vLink="blue" aLink="blue" MS_POSITIONING="GridLayout" language="javascript" onclick="return window_onclick()">
<form id="Form1" method="post" runat="server">
<asp:datagrid id="ClientGrid" style="Z-INDEX: 101; LEFT: 8px; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 32px" runat="server" Width="264px" Height="136px" AutoGenerateColumns="False" ShowHeader="False" BorderStyle="Solid" BorderWidth="1px" BorderColor="Black">
<AlternatingItemStyle BackColor="LightGreen"></AlternatingItemStyle>
<ItemStyle BackColor="LightYellow"></ItemStyle>
<Columns>
<asp:TemplateColumn>
<ItemStyle Width="40px"></ItemStyle>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:HyperLink id=EditLink runat="server" NavigateUrl='<%# "AddEditClient.aspx" & DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "ClientID", "?id={0}") %>' ImageUrl="http://localhost/MCGDeferral/AdminWeb/images/edit.gif">
</asp:HyperLink>
<asp:HyperLink id=DeleteLink NavigateUrl='<%# "DeleteClient.aspx" & DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "ClientID", "?id={0}") %>' ImageUrl="http://localhost/MCGDeferral/AdminWeb/images/delete.gif" Runat="server">
</asp:HyperLink>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateColumn>
<asp:BoundColumn DataField="ClientName"></asp:BoundColumn>
</Columns>
<PagerStyle Mode="NumericPages"></PagerStyle>

You could use my ConfirmedButton control, which was designed for this scenario. It's available as a free download.

Hi,
When trying to write my xml data to a string using StringWriter and XmlTextWriter
it writes to the string and sets the encoding to UTF-16. How do I control the encoding
when writing to a string (when writing to a file with Filestream I can control the encoding
through the XmlTextWriter constructor)?
Here is a codesnippet of my code:
System.IO.StringWriter sw = new System.IO.StringWriter();
XmlTextWriter writer = new XmlTextWriter(sw);
writer.Formatting = Formatting.Indented;
writer.WriteStartDocument();
....
writer.WriteEndDocument();
MessageBox.Show(sw.ToString());

I have created a console application with Visual Studio .NET in which I am attempting to retrieve a IDirectoryObject pointer using ADsOpenObject(). The code compiles ok but will not link. The linker is unable to resolve IID_IDirectoryObject even though I have added activeds.lib to the list of libraries. Is there a define I need to set to include Windows 2000 objects or is there another reason why my program will not link?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I've only recently become involved with codeproject so I haven't heard much about this .NET thing (also, my first issue of MSDN decided to come looong after the whole .NET announcement thing). As far as I can tell, .NET is supposed to replace Visual C++ for web development, am I correct? Must... find... clear... descriptions... of... .NET...

Hey gang,
Is there anyway to speed up the visual studio .net install?
It's INCREDIBLY long..
They should make it more interesting, like displaying the scripts for the first couple of "Buffy" seasons or something..sheesh!

I copied the DVD to my hard drive before I started the install
I only did that so i didn't have to put up with hearing the DVD spin up and down several times though.

I'm not a genius on this topic , but I'm pretty sure if you add, oh, say 512 more megabytes of RAM and have at least a 2.0 gHz AMD Athlon Processor, the installation might go a pint faster

Ok so the system requirements that MS publish for the .NET Framework are rather laughable. They are really scraping the bottom of the meaning of "minimum requirements".
So from your experience, what kind of hardware is suitable for a medium sized website running on the .NET Framework? RAM, CPU, HD etc.
thanks guys

That depends on the code you write. A bad programmer can bring down the biggest server.
I have my own webserver that runs both ASP and ASP.NET, and I have a medium busy site on it, and some sites with almost no wisitors.
And now the suprise: It's running on an old IBM PC Server 320, with Dual Pentium 166MHz CPU's, 256MB Ram, and 4 SCSI Disks in a RAID 5, and it runs perfectly good
It also run's a SQL Server 7.0, and mail for 5 domains...
