I would like to know if there a way in AD that I can limit a group not to logon to more than two computer at a time

No you can't. Concurrent login limitations are not supported by Microsoft.

Hi to everyone,
in order to simulate a fresh machine install and test the software I'm writing, I've just installed Virtual PC and installed a couple of machines in it: one with the same Windows XP CD I got from my PC manufacturer, and one with the same Windows 2003 Server CD used for our company server.
Now, when I start the new "machine" it warns me to register my copy of (Virtual) Windows XP or it will stop working within 30 days; the same applies to a "virtual" Windows 2003 Server I installed. Although I could wait the month and then reinstall the virtal machines, I'ld like to know if I can "register" the "virtual instance" of Windows XP, of course without invalidating my working copy, which is by far more important; the same question applies to the "virtual instance" of Windows 2003 Server.
Thanks in advance to anyone can help.

Nope. The retail copies of Windows fall under the same licensing restrictions (if not even more restricted) when you install them on a virtual machine, no different than if you installed them on new hardware.
You'd have to get new licenses for the two you installed under VM's.

I work in a library where we have public computers. We are having problems with people downloading to the local machine. Is there a way to stop people from doing this from the internet.

Hello,
I administrate a small network of 15 Windows XP Pro clients and a Windows 2000 server. As the server's storage media has become full, the users have stored their files on the client machines. I order to return to a centralized architecture, new storage will be added to the server. Various options are available : classical and non-classical.
I call the classical option adding new RAID1 SCSI disks to our server. It is validated by resellers and expensive. But a first analysis showed that many files are used non intensively : we need more archive space, and not so much concurrent quick file access. Thus, this classical solution looks to be to much performant for a low demanding usage.
The non-classical consists in optimizing the technology in regard to the file usage. I have two questions:
1) I am looking for a tool that would compute statistic information on file usage in a network (in the client machines and between clients and server), in order to get a more precise and deeper idea of the file usage
2) Which technology to choose for lower file requests (RAID1 SATA or eSATA, NAS) and what reliability may I expect from it ?
Thank you
Alain

Getting my new system set up this weekend and have found myself running into a very annoying issue..
I have a network path to my old machine open and am copying files from it to a drive on the new machine. The copy starts out fine but if I just let it go the copy seems to start to get slower and slower (accroding to the task manager network utilization graph) until eventually it times out and the OS gives me an error about the network name no longer being valid. Hmmm...
I noticed that if I navigate around in the window containing the network path a bit when I see it start to get slow I can bring it back to life. Seems like the OS is putting the network path to sleep after a while if it is not being 'used'.
Anyone seen anything like this?

Try to check the power option on your client machine, whether it set to stand by mode in a specific of time.

I recently wrote a utility that encrypts, compresses, ftps and datestamps your servers backup files. I use it with NT Backup on my server but it will work with anything.
I am posting about it here for two reasons, one I would like to get feedback and two because I would like ideas on what new things should be added.
The product is free and can be downloaded from my site.

Hope to hear from you.

Hi Matthew,
This is the 'Operating Systems / SysAdmin' board and is reserved for questions related to that.
If you want comments/suggestions then post your application as an article in the appropriate section and you should get them.

Reason I posted here, is the program has everything to do with sysadmin/os.
I'd agree with you if I posted it were posted in the lounge or Web Development areas. Problem is, if it were posted in testing, sysadmins would never go see the post and hence never see or know of it's existence.
Isn't the main reason people come to this forum because they are looking for answers? For all we know there could have been an influx of backup questions that were avoided by having this very post in plain site.
As for the feedback portion, who better to give feedback then the people who would be using the program to preform their job.

I agree, but I still think you will get no responses unless you post it as an article.
just my opinion

I am facing a problem using AzMan on Windows XP SP2. When i try to open\create an XML store, it gives the following error.
"Cannot open the authorization store. The following problem occured: The request is not supported."
Does anyone know what is wrong here?

Thanks for the reply Richard.
Yes, I installed Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Administration Tools Pack but it is still giving the same error.

But have you created the Policy Store, Defined Tasks and Operations, Create Roles and Assign Users, Configured ASP.net and so on as stated on that Microsoft Reference, not forgetting to follow the instructions in the Additional Resources.

Cant get to that stage...it is not letting me create a new or open any existing policy store. Each time i try to create a new store, or open an existing one (a XML store created on another machine) it gives that error i mentioned in the first post.

Did some debugging and found that a "CreateFile" call deep inside azroles.dll is failing. It tries to open the XML Store file with a call to "CreateFile" like this (Not actual code but assumption based on assembly code):
CreateFile("C:\\MSDNMagAzStore.xml::$data",<other parameters="">);
The full path of XML Store is only C:\MSDNMagAzStore.xml. What is that "::$data" it appends to the file path? Any ideas? This is the first time I have seen such CreateFile call.
After this finding...is this the right forum for this question?
