I'm not sure if this problem is related only to the "Windows Server 2003" screensaver or to any screensaver you set to password protect, however it happens often enough that it's becoming an issue.
We have a Windows 20003 server with the "Windows Server 2003" screensaver turned on and the "password protect" option enabled. In order to get back to the desktop, you have to type ctrl-alt-del to get the login screen and log back in. The server is on a workgroup, not a domain.
Every few weeks or so when I type ctrl-alt-del the screensaver goes away and shows the desktop wallpaper (as if it's preparing to show the login screen) but the login screen never appears. Once this happens, I can never get to the desktop again without forcing a hard reboot. I've let it sit for hours in case it was just "thinking", but the login screen never comes up. Pressing ctrl-alt-del again to try to get the Task Manager does nothing either.
When this happens the server still runs completely normally. I've tried remoting in and doing a normal reboot, but even though the message on the remote screen indicates it's going to reboot normally, nothing happens on the server.
Has anyone seen this before? Any idea how to avoid it?

What is the technique that you use to remote shutdown?

I log in using Remote Desktop Connection. I don't normally shut down the server this way as it's sitting beside me...but I have done it in the past for other reasons.

Try running the Service as a specific user.
1. Go to the Start Menu, Select Run and type "services.msc" and press return.
2. Select your Service, right click and choose "Properties"
3. Select the "LogOn" tab and enter in the details of a valid user.

Johnathan is partially correct. Go to the exact same place on the LogOn tab of your service's properties and try turning on "Allow service to interact with desktop".

This is a pretty simple question, but I'm having an unusually hard time finding an answer.
Where in the win9x registry can I find the key that holds the environment variables?
Thanks for any help.

They are not stored in the registry on Win98, they are either set in the Autoexec.bat file, or by the SET command.

Very complex.....
If I were going to try do this i would probably try changing the display settings so that you force it view a image that you send from ur computer for the monitors, and develop software that locks the Keyboards and Mice through disabling USB.
Have fun with that one.

locking the input would be better done via setting global hooks. Calling the next handler ie the one that passes everything except ctrl-alt-del to windows and your apps. (crtl-alt-del is processed before the hook to prevent malware from being able to block it) Screwing with the USB leaves you open to total defeat via PS2.

For a split second i though you were talking about being defeated by a Play Station 2.
Yes that is a good idea, didn't think of that. One problem is that if the kids are smart enough they might be able to override that. But if you keep throwing a USB disable function every couple of seconds.
and if the Students want to bring PS2 equipment in and use the computer with no monitor let them.

I would like to know if there a way in AD that I can limit a group not to logon to more than two computer at a time

No you can't. Concurrent login limitations are not supported by Microsoft.

Hi to everyone,
in order to simulate a fresh machine install and test the software I'm writing, I've just installed Virtual PC and installed a couple of machines in it: one with the same Windows XP CD I got from my PC manufacturer, and one with the same Windows 2003 Server CD used for our company server.
Now, when I start the new "machine" it warns me to register my copy of (Virtual) Windows XP or it will stop working within 30 days; the same applies to a "virtual" Windows 2003 Server I installed. Although I could wait the month and then reinstall the virtal machines, I'ld like to know if I can "register" the "virtual instance" of Windows XP, of course without invalidating my working copy, which is by far more important; the same question applies to the "virtual instance" of Windows 2003 Server.
Thanks in advance to anyone can help.

Nope. The retail copies of Windows fall under the same licensing restrictions (if not even more restricted) when you install them on a virtual machine, no different than if you installed them on new hardware.
You'd have to get new licenses for the two you installed under VM's.

I work in a library where we have public computers. We are having problems with people downloading to the local machine. Is there a way to stop people from doing this from the internet.

Hello,
I administrate a small network of 15 Windows XP Pro clients and a Windows 2000 server. As the server's storage media has become full, the users have stored their files on the client machines. I order to return to a centralized architecture, new storage will be added to the server. Various options are available : classical and non-classical.
I call the classical option adding new RAID1 SCSI disks to our server. It is validated by resellers and expensive. But a first analysis showed that many files are used non intensively : we need more archive space, and not so much concurrent quick file access. Thus, this classical solution looks to be to much performant for a low demanding usage.
The non-classical consists in optimizing the technology in regard to the file usage. I have two questions:
1) I am looking for a tool that would compute statistic information on file usage in a network (in the client machines and between clients and server), in order to get a more precise and deeper idea of the file usage
2) Which technology to choose for lower file requests (RAID1 SATA or eSATA, NAS) and what reliability may I expect from it ?
Thank you
Alain

Getting my new system set up this weekend and have found myself running into a very annoying issue..
I have a network path to my old machine open and am copying files from it to a drive on the new machine. The copy starts out fine but if I just let it go the copy seems to start to get slower and slower (accroding to the task manager network utilization graph) until eventually it times out and the OS gives me an error about the network name no longer being valid. Hmmm...
I noticed that if I navigate around in the window containing the network path a bit when I see it start to get slow I can bring it back to life. Seems like the OS is putting the network path to sleep after a while if it is not being 'used'.
Anyone seen anything like this?
