i have two cmd buttons:
one "submit" that goes to another page.
the 2nd is a "reset" button. how do i make a msg box appear ("are u sure you want to reset this form?"), if the "reset" button is hit? (i am programming in VBScript)

Make the button as normal button i.e.,
In the onClick event call a function, where in use confirm to diplay the msg box. If the user clicks the OK button call form.reset() to reset the form.

I give up. I've been beating my head against a wall for 6 months trying to get a trivial page to work, and I still don't know where to begin. Using InterDev I created a project, added a calendar control, then tried to access it using a script to read the user selections. Nothing works, and after arduously searching the miserable excuse for documentation that comes with InterDev, I'm no closer to finding a way to do it than I was the day I started. I won't even try to describe the futility of finding a way to access the database that is also part of this simple project - there's a lot of verbiage, but no information.
Can anyone recommend a text that actually contains useful information (not the ridiculously useless examples Microsoft provides) about implementing ASP? Bonus points will be awarded for anything that references InterDev - I've already discovered that it's worthless, but it's all I have and buying something else isn't in the budget. All I can find is material about ASP.NET, and that's not an option. Thanks!

I think you have the wrong end of MS's marketing hype stick here. Interdev to me is just a text editor. It does syntax highlighting and project management, and not much else. I would not use the form designer (WYSIWYG thing) for any real world ASP apps and I would not let Interdev do any code creation as it does a poor job of it. Don't listen to the MS marketing about Interdev, it is vastly overrated really and is hardly an "RAD IDE for ASP."
Remember you can write ASP pages in Notepad if you wanted, just like C++.
If you need help send me some question asking for what you want. e.g. How do I list a database table? How do I insert data etc.

InterDev sucks, but it has been effective for basic HTML stuff, and the CSS Editor really helped me to grasp the CSS concepts - that's probably the only thing that actually works, though. It's so tantalizing, though. "Ooh, there's a control I need - I'll just drag it over like the instructions say. Oh, and it will create a db for me, too! I'll just pop one into my project and use it there!" Then I discover that there's no way to use either one! I assume there's some magic going on in the global.asp file, but it isn't documented well enough to discover what it is. I even tried Themes once, but that was nothing short of a nightmare! The project had to be abandoned and started again from scratch, because the Theme was sticky, and after removing it, it kept returning.
Thanks for the site - it looks great, and I'll spend some time there studying. And I'll be emailing you - thanks for the offer!

Yeah. It is the same as in creating a Windows App. Sure you can use the drag-and-drop controls, but once you get past the basics you realise what a bad job they do.

Oh you poor bugger. I actually send an email to all new guys working here to "avoid Interdev themes at all costs, even for examples, samples, prototypes or just scrap projects."
I think MS actually realised what a joke Interdev was and so threw in Themes, FrontPage Server Extensions and those drag and drop widgets. I so hate seeing _vti folders in my web projects, brings tears to my eyes and then laughs of happiness as I delete them.

LOL this will seem very odd but I actually do use Interdev (well, VS.NET now.) It does a good job of syntax highlighting and it leaves your code alone well enough. Plus I get it with our MSDN subscription.
Dreamweaver MX is a good editor and it comes with Homesite which is also excellent.
Look, Interdev is fine if you leave all the "helpful" features alone and just use it as a big text editor with project management tools. It integrates nicely with Visual SourceSafe which is also useful.
But I would never pay money for Interdev (yes, yes people will say but I do because I buy MSDN. I buy MSDN for the other cool stuff, not Interdev.)

well! i have a problem which is a bit different from the general mood of questions here!
I have a client server application for which i want to calculate that:
in order to serve 40 client connections (doing file transfers with average file size being 3MB),
for which the clients must be having a download speed of atleast 4KB/sec
how much bandwidth must be allocated at the server side so that it server those 40 clients well!
I want answer to this specific quiestion and if some one can give me a formula for this i'll be very thankful.

An exact formula I can't provide, but a rule of thumb I use with decent results is to multiply the number of expected simultaneous client connections by the average acceptable download rate, then double it. In your case, the raw data rate required is 40 (#clients) X 4kbps (acceptable rate) = 160kbps. Since data packets are not pure data, and contain a significant amount of overhead, this rate won't be sufficient. Also, collisions will occur no matter how much bandwidth you allocate, so there has to be an allowance for retransmission of packets. Doubling the raw value has worked well enough for me, though it's probably overkill. In your specific case, I'd start with about 300kbps as a target value. If all the clients are not using the connection at the same time, 256k might be quite acceptable.

I should mention that the above is idealized quite a bit, assuming a dedicated virtual circuit between each client and the server. If your network is based on hubs, every packet will be sent to every node, and the bandwidth requirement will be much higher. In a switched or routed environment this calculation is easier, as the switch will maintain a virtual connection for you. You really have to look at the topology you have and do the math for each segment on a case by case basis, then design for the worst case.

Rewrite it entirely. Do not do what everybody says to do: "Just rename the file from .asp to .aspx.  In order to make full use of the features of ASP.NET, you would want to rewrite the app entirely.

I am having a BIG problem with something SMALL!!
I am trying to have my Databound field "NOTETEXT" WRAP, insted of expanding the table
to hold the full text. It seems to ignore my wishes!

Hi,
I am using ASP (not .Net) to display a crystal report. The form on the page before takes two dates in the format 'dd/mm/yyyy'. It also reads in a Firm ID from a session variable (arb, but maybe useful info).
The problem comes with this line:
set crtable = session("oRpt").Database.Tables.Item(1)
How do I add the other 2 items? I've tried
set crtable = session("oRpt").Database.Tables.Item(1) & session("oRpt").Database.Tables.Item(2) & session("oRpt").Database.Tables.Item(3)
but apparently that is not the correct way to concatenate more than one item (I have this working for other reports with only one value being passed to the stored procedure)
If anyone knows the syntax for that line, please help!

Does anyone know why a .NET app sometimes just seems to "time out" if something takes a bit too long when the app starts?
I started my app in debug mode, and set a breakpoint inside the Page_Load() event. I had looked at a variable's value for about 10 seconds when the app just gave up and stopped running.

This is just a web application project on my own machine. I have done nothing special regarding state.
In this project, this behaviour started after I installed Win2000 SP3 earlier today. Before I installed it, the project still loaded slowly (about 20 seconds), but at least the page loaded. Now it just gives up after about 10 seconds. I suspect that this service pack set a value somewhere, but that's just a guess.
This behaviour only occurs if I start my app from inside Visual Studio. (Whether I start it for debugging or not.) If I start the page from the browser, it loads fine (although slowly).

That is fine, however you need to understand that in web applications there is no state, you data and variables etc. only exist when they are on the server, they (e.g. - variables...) don't just wait for you at the server forever, it returns to the calling machine even if it is local.

But the problem is not with variables or data - it's that if I start my app from within Visual Studio .NET, it spontaneously shuts down if anything takes a bit too long when it's loading. Yet the page does load correctly if you load it directly from the browser.
