George,
I the result you want can be achieved by using javascript on the client.
Have a look at the window object: showModalDialog and showModelessDialog and using an IFrame in the pop-up child window. (I recommend the IFrame because it allows you to treat the content like a regular web page but the entire child window can be made modal to the parent window...
I hope this helps.

Hi, everyone!
I noticed that in java.sun.com, for each type
of OS, there are two materials deals with Java
to download, they are JRE and JDK.
My question is, what is the difference between
JRE and JDK?
If I just want to Programming with Java, I think
I only need to download JDK. Am I correct?
Cheers,
George

The JRE is the Java Runtime Environment and the JDK is the Java Development Kit.
You would use the JDK to write and run software and you would use the JRE to run it.
Dave.

JDK (Java Development Kit) is what is needed to develop and deploy java application i.e. a kind-of-interpreter/compiler for Java since it contains the compilers and debuggers. Its needed by the Java Developer/programmer.
JRE(Java Runtime Environment is to be used by the Java application user and consists of the Java Virtual Machine, the Java platform core classes, and supporting files - hence JRE is neede d to run Java Application

I am looking for a good book on Client/Server development (not Web developpment).
If it is applied to Windows and VC++, it is even better.
Any suggestion ?

If (Request("People") <> "") AND (Request.Form("Specify") <> "") Then
MsgBox "Please enter value for Q2"

You are confusing client side with server side.
When you use the <% and %> block declarations you are specifying that all code within that block is processed on the server and NOT sent to the client as is.
So in fact when you have the onclick="Validate()"> code firing off there is not function Validate to call because it was "left" behind on the server. Also you cannot get server side code to show an alert box on the client side directly.
So, this is how you do what you want to do.
<script language="javascript>
function Validate()
{
//ERROR CATCHING
//question 2
if (document.People == "" || AND document.Specify == "")
{
alert("Please enter value for Q2");
return false;
}else{ return true;}
}
</script>
<input TYPE=RESET name="btnAdd" value="Reset" onclick="return confirm('Are you sure you wish to reset?');"><input TYPE="submit" name="btnAdd" value="Submit" onclick = "Validate()">
So basically you are mixing up your client side code (JavaScript) and your server side code (ASP.)

Hi
Scenario:
I have a web page which is updated at very regular intervals. This page contains various links which change throughout the course of the day. My project is using MFC.
Problem:
I am using IHTMLElementCollection to get a list of anchors (<a>) which is working OK. I can obtain each anchor from this collection by assigning to IHTMLAnchorElement.
I need two bits of information. Firstly, the HREF from each anchor (which I can easily obtain by calling GetHref()).
The second piece of info I need is the text that the HREF is associated with...
For Example
.
.
<a href="www.sample-link.com">CLICK ME NOW!!!</a>
A call to GetHref() returns me "www.sample-link.com". What I'm also after is the text "CLICK ME NOW!!!"
Any ideas on how to do this?
Thanks In Advance
Gegzy

Tiz OK!
I've sorted it out (I think)
When getting the anchor to the current element using IHTMLAnchorElement, I needed to use IHTMLElement::GetInnerText() of the same element.
Worked a treat!
Would like some advice to see if this is the correct way or if there is a better way.
Thanks!
Gegzy

::GetInnerHTML(...) retrieves the full HTML code between begin and end tags, not only raw text without formatting. Depending on the application, one may use this or the other.

Hi
I'm running the SQL Desktop engine, and I'm try to fill a dataset with some data.
Now I get this error.
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'LEPPIE\ASPNET'.
Source Error:
Line 29: {
Line 30: // Put user code to initialize the page here
Line 31: sqlDataAdapter1.Fill(userDataSet1);
Line 32: DataGrid1.DataSource = userDataSet1;
Line 33: DataGrid1.DataMember = "Users";
Source File: d:\inetpub\wwwroot\XXXXX\webform1.aspx.cs Line: 31
This I do in the PageLoad Event.
How do I give the necesary right to the ASPNET user to access SQL? Or is this a no-no? I'm very new to the web side of .NET and I'm not sure if this is the correct way to do it either
Any help appreciated

i am coding in VBScript. i am coding for an online survey. for error handling (eg if the user forgets to fill out a field), is it possible to ensure all fields have been filled out BEFORE clicking the submit button? i wish for the user to be notified via a MESSAGE BOX, how would i go about this(using VBScript)?
thank you!

This doesn't work very well using VBScript - I've been down this rocky path before. However, contrary to popular opinion, VBScript & good ol' pain in the butt Javascript work very nicely on the same page.
Don't kill yourself trying to do something we all believe should have been integrated nicely into VBScript but wasn't. Just build your whole page in VBScript, but get your submit button to call a traditional javascript validation function.
You will sleep better this way

i have a series of checkboxes and radio buttons. when the user submits the information it goes to another page, where it is validated. however, if there is a mistake in the data, a hyperlink brings the user back to the original page. however, the checkboxes and radio buttons are back to their default state - how do i fix this? (i have used the session variable for the text boxes). here is an example of the checkboxes and radio buttons:

Instead of going back, make your script generate html output containing a new form with the previously entered data filled in. That way you can also easily highlight the fields that contained errors

i have two cmd buttons:
one "submit" that goes to another page.
the 2nd is a "reset" button. how do i make a msg box appear ("are u sure you want to reset this form?"), if the "reset" button is hit? (i am programming in VBScript)
thank you!

|

Make the button as normal button i.e.,
In the onClick event call a function, where in use confirm to diplay the msg box. If the user clicks the OK button call form.reset() to reset the form.

I give up. I've been beating my head against a wall for 6 months trying to get a trivial page to work, and I still don't know where to begin. Using InterDev I created a project, added a calendar control, then tried to access it using a script to read the user selections. Nothing works, and after arduously searching the miserable excuse for documentation that comes with InterDev, I'm no closer to finding a way to do it than I was the day I started. I won't even try to describe the futility of finding a way to access the database that is also part of this simple project - there's a lot of verbiage, but no information.
Can anyone recommend a text that actually contains useful information (not the ridiculously useless examples Microsoft provides) about implementing ASP? Bonus points will be awarded for anything that references InterDev - I've already discovered that it's worthless, but it's all I have and buying something else isn't in the budget. All I can find is material about ASP.NET, and that's not an option. Thanks!

4GuysFromRolla.com[^] is a very good resource for ASP.

I think you have the wrong end of MS's marketing hype stick here. Interdev to me is just a text editor. It does syntax highlighting and project management, and not much else. I would not use the form designer (WYSIWYG thing) for any real world ASP apps and I would not let Interdev do any code creation as it does a poor job of it. Don't listen to the MS marketing about Interdev, it is vastly overrated really and is hardly an "RAD IDE for ASP."
Remember you can write ASP pages in Notepad if you wanted, just like C++.
If you need help send me some question asking for what you want. e.g. How do I list a database table? How do I insert data etc.
