What data are you talking about? outlook keeps mails in a PST file which you can read if you know it's structure.

From my experience of programming specific interrupts (asm) are prohibited without access to an OS' api. For instance, one could not do a write to a hdd without utilizing an interrupt or in/out vector which has been preapproved by an API. In the case of windows you cannot do a write without win32 (I've tried). In Java, it is my understanding that a thing called the JNI links the OS local API to its own API. Am I correct? Is the JNI responsible for the connection between the two APIs?

JNI is Sun's concession to the fact that Java just can't do everything that C or C++ can.
It is an interface to native code, usually in the form of DLLs. It is a horrible horrible beast, and the documentation on it is almost deliberately difficult to understand.
If this is a completely new project, you would be responsible for writing 3 different things. The native code program (pick a language, probably C/C++), the Java front end, and the JNI piece which is also written in native code.
Good luck if that's what you want to do.

I'm not trying to write anything, I'm trying to figure out Java's relationship to an OS. I know the JNI has more functionality, but I thought it also acted as the connection to the OS. What mechanisms allow java to communicate with the native OS? As I said, many things couldn't be done, to my knowledge, without some communication with the OS.

The JVM (Java Virtual Machine) is written in native code, customized for the OS+machine architecture it runs on.
It is the interpreter of Java bytecode and decides how that code should be translated to native code for its platform.
Sun publishes the specs on the JVM so that anybody can write their own.

Dim sScriptWindowOpen As String = "<script>window.open('message.htm',null,'left=400, top=100, height=250, width= 250, status=no, resizable= no, scrollbars= no, toolbar= no, location = no, menubar = no');</script>"

Have you tried RegisterClientScriptBlock instead of RegisterStartupScript?
ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Me.GetType(), "anything", sScriptWindowOpen)

Hi there,
could the package javax.sip helps in an application that is supposed to send register and invite messages (sip message) to a specific server , the server is an asterisk PBX, instead of using the java asterisk,
in other words: part of the application is supposed to talk to the asterisk , and I want to do it via the javax.sip, as the application already contains sip functionalities,
any help please, tutorials, links that teach about sip programming using javax.sip code samples, main classes that I might use
thanks in advance
There is always something to learn

Hi everyone!
I'm working on a project and i need to do what follows:
i have an array of strings, example:
house3
house2
green23
green.5
H6
H01
G19
G78
..and so on.
I have to extract only the recurrent strings: house, green,H,G.
Any idea about it? (the language is java but doesn't matter, i just need the idea!)
Thanks in advance,
Enrico.

I recommend Assembly. You could go with machine code if you needed more control, but I find it takes a lot of time lining up the 1s and 0s properly.
Do you know what a loop is?

Hi there,
I use implement some dll using java-native-interface (JNI) and try to call the JNI function from a java application. In java run-time environment (JRE) 1.6, the program works fine; while in JRE 1.5, the program will crash and return EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW in the eclipse debug console window.
Now that, the customer is using JRE 1.5 and not willing to update to JRE 1.6. What can I do to make it work in JRE 1.5?
Thanks a lot!

The best answer we can give is fix the stack overflow problem.

I have figured out how to fix this.
Yes, it is a stack overflow issue. But the problem is not in my code. It is because JRE 1.5 limit the default stack size to a small amount.
Java pre-allocate stack for native library. In JRE1.5, the default stack size is 128k. To make an application run with bigger call stacks, one needs to use the native stack option (-ss) when executing a class or jar file.
I make my application work in JRE1.5 by using the following command:
java -ss1024k myclass

i need to write a simulation program for a x number of a device. the real device has an SNMP agent on it which i need to simulate.
ive looked into snmp4j and the javax.management lib for snmp but i'm struggling to create anything close to what i need. As far as i can work out i need to set up an SNMP server with a custom mib to respond with the the data for my simulated device. however trying to immpliment this is proving to be a headache.
