How many times have you seen new articles appear via the submission wizard that have broken image or download links? Loads. How about a bit of scripting to check the files linked to in an article are actually present (if it is one that is stored locally)?
|
|
|
|
|
One way this could be helped, is if the default CodeProject template had the sample download/images in the correct folder. Currently, it looks like this:
<ul class=download>
<li><a href="Article_demo.zip">Download demo project - XXX Kb </a></li>
<li><a href="Article_src.zip">Download source - XXX Kb</a></li>
</ul>
<p><img src="Article.gif" alt="Sample Image - maximum width is 600 pixels" width=400 height=200></p>
In reality, the .zips and the images get placed in the "\ArticleName\" directory. This is the main cause of broken zips or images that I have seen. So, maybe if the template was changed to something like:
<!-------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Change ARTICLE_NAME below to the name of your article (the directory it will be placed in).
-->
<ul class=download>
<li><a href="ARTICLE_NAME\Article_demo.zip">Download demo project - XXX Kb </a></li>
<li><a href="ARTICLE_NAME\Article_src.zip">Download source - XXX Kb</a></li>
</ul>
<p><img src="ARTICLE_NAME\Article.gif" alt="Sample Image - maximum width is 600 pixels" width=400 height=200></p>
I'm sure Chris M. could come up with something better than what I just did, but it's a start.

Is there anyway to query which articles I voted 5?
As I voted number of articles 5 but I forgot them to add to my bookmark list.
It's very difficult to go back and search individually out of 3,696 articles (as of today).
Whenever I visit any random article, it remembers I voted that article or not. So Is it possible to query that?

Can we have Bob holding a cricket bat while the world cup is going on, please? Seeing that so many regulars are talking, eating and sleeping cricket these days, it should be possible, shouldn't it?
And then Australia is the favourite team for the cup. <<hint hint,="" nudge="" nudge,="" wink="">>
Oh please Chris, please, please, please?

To where?
Maybe the Indian captain will be handing the cup to Shaun Pollock?

Hello,
I love your website it's Swell..
Problem:
I always see an article that I feel is relavant, but not timely.. Then two or three weeks later I go looking for it, and can't remember where it was.. or if it was even on this site.
Solution:
If there were checkboxes in front of the articles, I could check them off, and then batch save them to my BookMarks..
Thad be really Swell'n .

Chris, I just want to let you know that I find the advertisement you are carrying for www.chatplanetx.com to be highly objectionable. I truely hope you do not need to advertise semi-pornographic material just to make ends meet. I am requesting that you remove them as advertisers.

They are not advertisers and we will never advertise such material. We pride ourselves on the advertising we allow on our site and would never allow such material to be shown on CodeProject.

Maybe consider placing a link to the "link 2 us" page seperately on the bottom of the main side navigation bar, and even on the banner listing page, because I've gone looking for them on three seperate occasions now and each time I have ended up going back and forth between half a dozen pages before finally clicking the "CodeProject Stuff" link. IMHO it doesn't belong under the "Community" header, that is confusing.

how about: you shouldn't be allowed to rate a post you've replied to, or rate one that's a reply to you. (just check parent and child when the rating buttons are pressed).

What about when you want to rate an answer to one of your questions in the VC forum to show that it has been answered?
Either that or it should not apply to the programming forums.

OK, but then I can always create another login just to rate messages and use my regular one to post.
People will abuse the system if there is one to abuse. They will find a way. All you can do is to try to limit that abuse by how much people can abuse it, and how many people can abuse it (not everyone will think of or care enough to create another login, for example).
But the more restrictions you put, the more you limit people's freedom, the less interested they get in the thing. And the more freedom you give people, the more they will abuse it. We have lost it both ways. Why not let them do what they want at least? Who cares what the rating is for a particular post? I don't, for one. I had opposed the rating system from the very first day that it was proposed/implemented, though I didn't know it would be abused like this.

Rohit Sinha

or, you could hack into CP servers and change all the ratings right in the DB!
seriously, of course they could do this . but is it worth it for them?
Rohit Sinha wrote:

based on the fact that people use the ratings system, i will assume that many people care what the rating is.
