I can't believe this list didn't include Python and Ruby. I know we're a Microsoft community here, but really!

...... COBOL.
Just think of the file definitions in COBOL. That is exactly the Union data structure you can create in C.
And the mischief caused by the ALTER statement in COBOL is exactly what you get when you use pointers in C.
Many people think that C is derived from algorithmic languages that preceded it. I maintain that it is COBOL dressed up in very few reserved words!

"C", but I did notice that absence of php - which is used a very great deal and as far as C-Like goes, it includes so much of the C function library.

only 8 others for D? it has very good performance, and is way better than C++.

I think that's extremely subjective.

Maybe the lack of a wide library and good IDE support is the culprit....
|
|
|
|
|
I disagree. As for libraries, check the dub repos, everything is there. And for the IDE, Mono-D works pretty well.
|
|
|
|
|
Yes, put it in a working environment. New IDE, new untested (as in hundreds of thousands of projects running fine with it) compiler, different and non mature libraries, lack of codebase.
It might work, but exactly what pressing problem does it solve? D, and many other languages, are solutions waiting for their problems, which hampers their capability of being used.
Either a tool solves a problem or it will remain as "the odd one".

Pretty much everything is better than C++.

You clearly aren't familiar with PHP. Even Lua or perl is better than PHP
I do not fear of failure. I fear of giving up out of frustration.

I'm surprised, though, it surpasses C++ by such a wide margin!

Now I can't say I don't like Java, I just don't like any IDE that support Java. But no one here even mention about Java. My favorite is C#, very similar to Java with better IDE (Visual Studio). Must've been Oracle's latest incursion with Google that drive people into hiding.

Android Studio (or IntelliJ) is a far better code editor than the VS editor. I am so much faster with it, once get used to it's specials.
The intellisense is far ahead from microsoft's intellisense, too.
Only thing that makes me crazy, is that the "+" and "-" characters do not force autocomplete, like when you want a "index++" in your code and you just type "i+"... MS editor then completes correctly, intellij doesn't.
but beside from that, as I have currently exact that situation, that I had to work for over 7 months with intellij and now I am partially back to VS, I see how creepy slow that visual studio editor is in code generation, formatting, bad intellisense...
oh, and the snippet editing/managing is far ahead too. And you have Gist support. Lightyears ahead.
no, i do not agree.

Someone said he is not married with C#, too late for me.
I guess I'd better start praying then because after 15 years of marriage to C#, I think I'm engaged with JavaScript now.

See my earlier response for some reasons why I don't believe it would necessarily be a completely insane choice.

That option is disastrous, probably those 28 people will have great matching skill.
You can have all the tools in the world but if you don't genuinely believe in yourself, it's useless.

Been a C# developer for more than 10 years. Currently been working with JS for over a year - as long as you can stomach falsy and float numbers it's a perfectly rational choice for webby stuff. Consumes and (produces) APIs beautifully...
