I need to write a pro-quality database web application, using all MS technologies. I can't emphasize enough that The app must have COM controls that do not use .NET!
Well, I am thinking about ASP.NET. How difficult is that to use with COM objects in a web application? What is the development environment for ASP.NET? I assume VS 7.0? (I am a VC 6.0 guy).
Can Visual Studio 7.0 be used to develop for ASP and COM without using .NET?

Easy, just add a reference to the project and whoala.

Yes, also you can try a WebMatrix, wich is free (and yet from Microsoft)

I'm curious as to the requirement for COM and no .NET?
If this is a web app what does it matter what you use on the backend?

Mark Nischalke wrote:

We have existing C++ classes that are required for some of the data processing, and these do not use .NET (and we use VC++ 6.0 only, to keep cost down and productivity up). So to leverage the existing code, they will be wrapped in COM objects.
Mark Nischalke wrote:

Mainly what I stated above, but it is also because the web app may actually be sold to customers on installed on their servers, so it affects the customers system requirements.
I am curious your perspective on those answers.

I have one ASP.NET (C#) site that uses COM objects for some functionality. I would say it is a non-issue. You can use COM and .NET effectivly.
You could also simplify your deployment and updating by using ASP.NET.

Dear All,
I am creating a self service utility for users to reset the password for their colleague’s Win2K id in a domain. But to reset the password, one should have admin privileges. Since we can not give everybody admin privileges, we thought of binding the object using Admin credentials (OpenDSObject) and then using this admin object to reset the password. But since multiple users will be simultaneously accessing the site, please advice whether same credential used to bind the same object will create the problem or not.
Looking for an update eagerly
Thanks a lot In advance

I am using oracle database to store my data. Then I have problem to retrieve data that store date, I have try to use this code;
sql = "SELECT DELIVERY_DT, CONTROL_NO, LOCATION FROM DELIVERY WHERE DELIVERY_DT = to_date(21/07/2003) ORDER BY DELIVERY_DT DESC"
but it is not function, I also try the function like in vb with the # sign like; .... WHERE DELIVERY_DT = #21/07/2003# and this come out with error invalid char.
Anybody have experience with this problem, please help me?
Thanks

It seems to me that your sql query is not valid.
Try TO_DATE('21-07-2003', 'DD-MON-YYYY')
See NSL_DATE_FORMAT
|
|
|
|
|
To not to get such date errors, always use universal form of dates, which is "YYYY-MM-DD". So your statement will look like:
SELECT DELIVERY_DT, CONTROL_NO, LOCATION
FROM DELIVERY
WHERE DELIVERY_DT = '2003-07-21'
ORDER BY DELIVERY_DT DESC

Hi,
I have a problem on storing foreign char to SQL DB.
If user inputs a foreign char from asp page, for example, "ROSÉ", it
will be stored in the DB as "ROSé".
I need to be able to store as it is in the DB, "ROSÉ".
BTW, it is displayed properly in the Web GUI.
Thanks for any help that you can provide,
Charles

You are having a problem with character encoding. The easiest way to fix this problem is to simply replace the É with É the html encoded equivalent before inserting into the database. For a complete list of such encodings visit this page:

The Server object should provide you with some methods to encode and decode characters. Also, make sure the database uses MBCS or Unicode for strings. In SQL Server, this is nvarchar or nchar (which pads extra space with spaces).

Thanks Steve and Heath for your reply.
I found the solution, although it was not obvious at first.
It turns out that web application uses UTF-8 encoding, and SQL uses UCS-2.
This different encoding standard caused the wrong data conversion.
The following article explains the issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;232580
I hope this helps other people who has similar issue.

I just learned PHP and I am using it in conjunction with mySql. I just wanted to say that php rules. It is really easy. I run a wrestling roleplay site and the members can actually edit there own pages but I dont have to give them a password to my site. They run there own stable bio and things like that so for those of you who have not yet checked out php take a look into it. Also if using php all a person will see when they click on view and source is just whatever html you used which means sometimes they will see nothing at all but if there is something that I am not seeing that php is bad let me know

Round here, a lot of us will be using ASP or ASP.NET, which can do everything you described And view source always shows the HTML sent to the client, not the PHP/ASP/Whatever on the server.
