I thought CP was owned and supported by Dundas, it's not?
I do not know if this would work well or not, but you could have a simple "sponsors" button that would list all your sponsors or possibly a list of sponsors that would not actually have advertisements on the site. That is, a list hundreds (if not thousands) of sponsors of various types from various affiliates programs where CP can earn a revenue. They do not have to be tech oriented since some of us (not quite sure who) has more to living than just tech. People could actually support CP while buying gummy bears or those new satellite radio …
These affiliate programs like Commision Junction offer thousands of possible advertisers that would not really fit the nature of this site, but if they were listed in a special sponsor page, users that felt like supporting CP could visit those vast offers and generate a few extra dollars. You might be surprised at the response, even more so if you can find a way on CP to clarify that you are not backed by Dundas with deep pockets.
Another thought is that you could have links page where it would have a ton of links to other sites on various topics where people only had to pay say $5-$10 per month for a link. Would also be great on that page to have a category for recently posted links so we can check them regularly without having to go through all the older ones. You could have hundreds or thousands of links.

Have you checked into dedicated remote servers lately? I cannot seem to find any solutions that even come close. There are several companies that off more features, but as an example, ServerBeach (which I have ordered a server from) offers dedicated 2 Ghz Windows 2003 Server (not web) machines with 60 Gig of storage and a Gig of RAM with 900 Gigs of transfer for $139 per month and no setup fees. I know of nothing that is even close in T1-T3 prices. One place I found (but do not remember the link at the moment) offered dedicated servers with full 10 megabit wide open servers for a few dollars shy of $400 per month. I believe the latter provided hardware firewalls, backup drives and web farming.

Many of the message boards are not seen by a large portion of the members as they do not have time to visit (yep, I am gulity, so what ).
What would be cool is if a person could specify the message boards to watch and when they first log in, it would display the last (x) amount of messages thread subjects for the messages bases they have selected. They could be listed above the survey on the main page and might ad more traffic to boards other than the lounge
Might even be nice to see a list of threads for each of the message bases a user has selected, be included in the newsletter so that they you do not miss out on important posts.
I personally would use both methods

You know when you have been using something for a long time, you start to notice little things. They dont exactly irritate you, but you just wonder why they are there. Example, when I log onto codeproject, there is a link saying join codeproject. Yet, I am a member.
Remember, I am not saying thats bad or anything, just something I noticed.

I wonder if it won't also attract the 'wrong' audience, i.e. off the scope of the site, like you said.

Would it be possible to include the article rating, article number of votes and article number of views, to the article list that displays the most recently submitted articles. Maybe even the number of comments, too. Most of the time, these are new articles, so the numbers would be small to start with, but as the day progresses, these numbers would begin to take on significance. This would be especially helpful for updates, though.
Thanks for hearing me out.

CodeProject (in the last few months and getting worse as time goes by) is painfully slow to the point of unusability on a regular basis.
Not a connectivity problem at this end (I've checked), just overwhelmed at that end I guess.
I suspect it's the database server judging by where the slowdowns occur.
Is it possible that the current database and queries are not fully optimal or is it a hardware issue?
Can we donate to a hardware upgrade fund or something?
(I've gone through the suggestions here and didn't see anything similar, perhaps I'm the only one seeing this slowdown problem, but if not, seems that it's more pressing than just about any other new feature.)
I support two teams: the Canucks and whoever is playing the Leafs!
