If you format Winxp with FAT32 it mean that you can view XP partition with windows explorer in winme. Then just delete everything from drive D: and go to the root drive C: and find the file boot.ini . An example of the content of the boot.ini file is show below.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
In your computer you will find two something like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows ME" /fastdetect
Then change the file to become:
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows ME" /fastdetect
This mean your windows boot only windows Me.
In case that your winxp format with NTFS. I recommend you to delete the partition of windows xp. To delete the partition just make a boot diskette in windows 98 and boot it from the A: drive then run FDISK command. Then delete the patition with labled: "Delete Non DOS partition "
john_tran wrote:
2> ME, keep XP.
I think in this case you might not possible to do that, whether windows xp install on drive D: but some file system of windows xp is stored in drive C: too.
Good luck

Try this way:
1. Start your computer in windows xp.
2. Remove the folder program file and windows folder from your windows me drive. Don't remove other file because it might contain system file to boot to windows xp.
3. Edit boot.ini file to remove the line that point to boot to windows me. Test it if it boot successfully then configure the time out to 0 in order to boot immediately to windows xp because will have only one operating system.

Try to check the information from here[^]. On the other hand, I think you should put the complete name in the path to the specific place in the registry key.
jlawren7 wrote:
HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\ComputerName\ComnputerName
It should change too:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\ComputerName\ComnputerName
or:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\ComputerName\ComnputerName
Good luck

the key does exist cuz i copied and pasted the key

Hi,
I'm working on a web service programmed with ATL Server templates and classes. This web service is under testing in a Windows 2000 Server, IIS 5. It's running with high (isolated) application protection (so a new DLLHOST process appears when I make a request to my web service). I've noticed (using Process Explorer) that when an unhandled exception raises, Windows kills all my components in the DLLHOST process, but doesn't kill the DLLHOST process itself (of course, the user owned one, not the system DLLHOST). I just want to know why it behaves like that. Is it not supposed to kill the whole process that produces an unhandled exception?
Thanks,
Federico

Hello all,
I'm having a problem with a call to SetCurrentDirectory, which is returning "Access denied". The folder in question has only Read access granted to the user, not List Folder Contents. This seems the correct behaviour to me, given the info in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303758.
However if I share the folder and make the call to SetCurrentDirectory with "\\computername\myshare\myfolder", then the call succeeds, even though it's the same folder has the same permissions.
I wondered if someone might know why this could be? I need to use the full C:\ path in my application and must not change the permissions (the app currently uses a network share which also works fine with just Read permission).
Apologies in advance if this is a daft question - I'm new to Windows security.
Thanks,
Stuart

IF you look at What MSDN says about SetCurrentDirectory,you will find answer to your problem.
here what is what MSDN states
Each process has a single current directory made up of two parts:
A disk designator that is either a drive letter followed by a colon, or a server name and share name (\\servername\sharename)
A directory on the disk designator

Thanks for your message. However I'm not sure it explains why I get differing behaviour i.e. success when using the "server name and share name", and failure when using the "drive letter followed by a colon", even though both strings point to the same folder.
I suspect the share permissions are overriding the folder permissions, and only come into play when the share is used to access the directory. I thought I could test this by explicitly denying "List Folder Contents" and allowing "Read" on the folder, but this option is not allowed by the Windows permissions dialog...

Yep, you got it right, im making that application =).
I've tried using those API's but it does not work and gets error during compilation.
I've also tried using InitiateSystemShutdown API but also i got error during compilation.
As for my compiler i'm using Embedded Visual C++ 4.0
Thanks Aloc

If you have the Page size in Words, the Word size in Bits, and each Virtual Address (p, i) occupies 1 word, how do you calculate the size of the Virtual Memory (number of words) and the size of the Page Table (number of entries)?
Thanks,

Depends on what you mean by unix...
Sun has some free versions of Solaris, though there are restrictions on what you can do with it. I think it is even legal to call Solaris Unix.
Any BSD systems (netBSD, openBSD, freeBSD, etc) is a direct decendent of Unix, but by this time there is no Unix left in it, so it is no longer legal to call it Unix.
At this point in time Unix does not exist except as an abstract concept. In the real world any of the above 5 (linux plus the 4 I named) are unix.

Thank you very much for your comment. I might return to linux again to learn it from scratch.

In windows 98, if you want to change the logo you have to edit the file logo.sys or logos.sys. But in windows xp, I not sure too how to the file that affect the picture of the windows xp that start up. But try to check this website[^]. It might offer some feature that you need to customize your windows xp. Let me know if it is match what you need or not.

there's a little app called BootXP (www.bootxp.net) which will do that for you, or there are plenty of places on the internet where you can find instructions on how to change the boot screen. the easiest way is to edit your boot.ini though. the splash screen itself is contained in C:\{WinDir}\{SysDir}\NTOSKRNL.EXE. but, before you go scratching around in these files, go read up on this stuff on the internet...
