what concept is used in e-dictionary?

hi,
Anyone know what concept might be used in e-dictionaries. that means when a word is clicked, it automatically displays all its meaning.
whether every word is connected to their corresponding link or any other database oriented concepts included??

Generally, in this type of application when a user clicks on a link a SMS messge is sent to volunteer Elves, off duty from the North Pole mostly, who immediately lookup the word in printed unabridged Webster's dictionaries. They then login to a web server via a special highly secured VPN and write a webpage with the definition of the word. They then send this to the user who clicked on the word. Points are given to each Elf for the speed and accuracy of their response; something like the reputation points here.
