I have an excel sheet that contains a column in which the data is as below, and the cell format is general:

1
2
12
1\a
1\b
3
3\a
4
5
6
6\a
7
8
9
10

If I sort this I get the result as:

1
2
12
1\a
1\b
10
3
3\a
4
5
6
6\a
7
8
9

However, I want the result as:

1
1\a
1\b
2
3
3\a
4
5
6
6\a
7
8
9
10
12

If any one has any ideas, please help me. :)

Create another column that has =VALUE(first column) and sort by that. This should work fine as long as you don't have #a#.

Format as text

Select custom sort

Select 'Sort numbers and numbers stroed as text separately'

It works on Excel 2007. Cannot remember exact procedure on 2003 but if this does not work let me know
