I have been rather successful developing with a combination of C++, ATL, and VB6, XML, and SQL Server. It may sound like a messy combination, but it allows me to push pretty robust stuff out the door quickly. I develop my core services and reusable components in C++ and build them to call plug-in style COM DLLs written in VB to do most of my data access and business logic. Using this method, I can quickly adapt my systems to deal with several different situations by writing new plug-ins to the system in VB.

Well Flash ActionScript isnt exactly what i call a powerful language, but it does allow communication with web-servers with HTTP and XML
Nevertheless, I'd love to learn a whole lot more about DHTML and ASP which i have fairly limited knowledge about.

That was one of my "other". For any who don't know, it's a cross-platform class library for C++. It doesn't have *all* the bells and whistles as MFC, but it works pretty well. Anyone else use it?

Don't forget STL (a part of the C++ standard but worth a separate mention I think).

I agree - I didn't mention it because I take it for granted that people *would* use STL, although discussions here have shown this is not always the case. It would be worthwhile to get an idea of how many people have *seen the light* as far as STL is concerned.

I can't be sure, but I guess it's about scare to use and a little bit of deployment hassle(another dll to deploy).
They would not go for non-Microsoft STL, and Microsoft one has too many bugs to rely on it. That is how Microsoft kills the technologies - implement enought to rule out the competition, yet still tuneling you into their path...

Actually, while I know the M$ STL is not perfect, it's always worked for me when I've used it. What problems have you found ?
Also I don't believe STLport's STL implimentation requires a dll.

STL itself is implemented as a bunch of header files. Therefore it does not need an extra dll. However, if you are working with multiple dlls, be aware that Visual C++ implementation of STL (prior to VC 7.0, in which that problem is supposed to be fixed) may give you a real headache  . Of course, you can always download the SGI version of STL.

actually, that's not entirely true.
if you use the MFC DLLs along with STL, you need to bring along an extra DLL (i forget which one, it's been a while) that contains a bunch of common STL vector specializations (vector of ints, etc.). this hit us hard a few months ago when we found out.

Do you mean msvcp60.dll? This one is needed whenever you use C++ standard library (if you link run-time libraries dynamically).

possibly.
but whichever DLL it is, you need it even if you're only using std::vector, std::sort and std::unique. in my opinion, it is an utterly ridiculous requirement.

Unfortunately, working for the US government has trapped me into a nightmare of ADA programming. Don't complain about anything concerning Java or C/C++ or MFC or STL or Microsoft or Sun. Complain about nothing I tell you, until you've worked in a 2+ million LOC system developed in ADA by programmers with no experience in OOA/OOD.

Replacing it with C# here. It never really lived up to the hype. C# in it's first incarnation is better than Java today.
