I have used both Microsoft and Logitech optical mice, and have to say I think the MS one is much better at not getting troubled by the picture on the mouse pad.

I use the laminated wood surface of my desk -- never had any problems. It's good stuff.

I've found for the most part, optical mice work the best without a mouse pad on just about any surface. I am using one right now on a terracotta tile table and it works great.

Isnt that a bit too abrasive to the plastic of the mouse?

I just checked and the mouse shows only a little bit of scratches on the four pads that make contact with the desk. There is a small amount of gunk on them which probably acted as a lubricant between the abrasive tile and the plastic.

Assuming it's got a glossy clear plastic cover over the photo, just uses some 220 grit sandpaper to give it a "satin" finish and you'll be fine.
That said, the MS Optical mouse is tons better than the Logitech Optical. You might want to also try the new Logitach Dual Optical "with better tracking".

I had a Logitech cordless keyboard/mouse package. Both bits of hardware lastest less than a year - the mouse in particular was SH*ITE. Warning - avoid at all costs. They may be better now, but I expect better quality for the money (£70 at the time).

I treat my hardware with respect. Usually. he he. The space bar went on the keyboard and the left-click button on the mouse.
I now have the MS optical job - only £20 from the local shop and the best mouse ever, ever, ever!!!

My logitech cordless mouse is the best investment I ever made. It has survived my daughter using it, my son throwing it, and people in the office abusing it. You got a dud, I guess, but my experience causes me to recommend them without reservation.

Have a vanilla Logitech mouse (cable, wheel, mechanical). The mouse itself is ok, but the USB cable is just to short, and it took me three days to make it cooperate with my ZIP drive on my Win9x box.

The only Logitech device I use is their trackballs, which work great (especially on planes with laptops).

think somewhen i have to fight for a decent mouse..

If you would have kept the mouse MS would send you a brand new one, sometimes you don't even need to send them the bad one

It should have some "hovercraft" system, so it would hover over the table. I am really annoyed by cleaning it from junk that comes on the bottom side!

I thought that I'd be able to stop cleaning my mouse, once I got an optical mouse.
But it seems I clean my mouse even more often now -- as the 'pads' on the bottom of the mouse collect every bit of dirt off of my desk.
It is less work to clean it, but I still clean it every other day.

It´s strange... I got an optical mouse and all the fuzz is sticking on table and not on the mouse. I´ve to use a scrapter from time to time to remove the fuzz from my table.

My optical mouse gathers a thick layer of crud on the corner pads which causes it to skitter when I move it. I need to scrape the pads at least once a week.

I second that. Dunno whether you have witnessed that here, but meanwhile more and more developers here have an optical mouse
