Colleagues of mine have an additional aid: the lights in an office are controlled by a movement sensitive censor in the ceiling. Occasionally, the lights turn off because there has been no apparent movement in the office. D'oh, just the fingers move over the keyboard.
They have to start waving, almost dance, to get the lights turn on again . It looks quite funny, as if people are drowning and signaling for help!

Since switching to the "dvorak" keyboard layout, I've felt very comfortable no matter how long I type. When I play FPS though, with the mouse... painful again. My whole hand goes cold and my wrists and fingers ache. But typing is comfortable, because I'm basicalyl just wiggling my fingers now instead of actuall spidering them all over the keyboard.

when i look at http://www.mwbrooks.com/dvorak/layout.gif it seems to me it uses normal keyboard just "renames keys"
what is main idea you feel different? this only?
i afraid for c++ programmer there are minor changes (i more use non-letter characters, hot- and cursor keys than common typists)

The layout is more natural to typing.
The original layout was for typewriters (those mechanic ones), which had to make a compromise beetween fast typing, and not jamming the arms that hold the letters - so you actually had to be slowed down...

Do you ever go back to a qwerty keyboard when you work on someone elses computer?
I thought about switching to DVORAK, but I use a number of different computers, and I was worried about that problem.

I haven't used anybody else's computer for a long time. There are two other computers on the network here at home, and one is all dvorak and the other one has an icon to switch to it.
If you work on a number of different computers, it makes things a lot difficult. Requires more patience. But still, any time you can type dvorak after having typed qwerty, it feels really good.

It will cause an injury. If you run too much, your joints wear out, smoke and you get cancer, and the list goes on. Life is not safe so just accept it. BTW all those union guys are probably laughing at our "malidies".

I thought that maybe someone would care about their health.

Why is that sad? No one automatically knows they should sit a certain way, or take breaks every x minutes.

I think that lots of people care.
I also think that there are people that take their health for granted.
Do you care about your health, what do you do to maintain it?

I have a PC at home and at work. In addition to taking regular breaks,
At home, I use a right handed mouse (I'm mainly right handed for most activities).
At work, I use a left handed mouse (with the buttons switched too).
Benefits:
1) Creates variation and therefore reduces the risk of RSI
2) Annoys the hell out of anyone who want's to use my computer
By the way, does anyone use wrist rests for keyboard or mouse?
I think thay could be more harmful since they compress the area of the wrist that they are 'designed' to protect.

I have nice squishy wrist wrests on my mouse pads. For the keyboard I don't need one - you shouldn't be resting your wrists on anything if you have your hands in the proper position.

Not yet. I actually prefer the shape of the standard mouse
I'm not really left handed, I just configure my mouse at work that way

I can relate that.
I had a boss once that had a graphic arts degree and he told me that he was taught to use his left hand for drawing with the mouse since the right-side of the brain controls both artistry and your left hand. I don't know how much merit that actually holds, but he was right handed as well.

Oh, it does. I bang my head only half as much now, thus cutting down the chance of a serious injury by 50%
