FWIW, another developer here has a little utility that turns remove machines (like a laptop sitting on yer desk) into another monitor, so that you can then use it like a second (third, etc.) display.
I do not remember the name of it (NetView, or something like that, I think...), but it seems interesting.
Peace!

or multiple computers.... I answered 2, because my primary computer has two... but then I stopped to think about it, the question really was "Do you use multiple monitors at work? If so how many?." I have 2 monitors, Cintiq, and a laptop. My two primary computers are linked to one shared monitor then one has the 2nd 24" the other the Cintiq, the laptop can share the one shared monitor too, but I rarely do.
I have used a 4 monitor (2x2) display for shows, but I don't use it at my desk. I will occasionally configure my computers in a shared rendering frame to test code for large monitor displays at shows, but that is rare. So although I did answer 2, I can see easily how someone can answer more.

Might be nice to have two, but I think it'd be overkill. While I often have a lot of windows open, it's rare that I am actually using more than one simultaneously... so I just maximise the one I'm using. And the "auto-hide" feature of the taskbar is pretty nice (well, until some app "swallows" it... Visual Studio and Eclipse seem to be particularly bad about that...)

It has been a while since I had a dual monitor system to use. It was a big boon for debugging. One monitor showing the debugger and source-code whilst the second monitor displayed the app. (Especially useful with DirectX and paint code)

which is exactly why when I ordered ONE 24" LCD at work, my boss doubled it (well, actually quadroupled it, and kept two for himself). I never had dual displays until it was bought for me, now I can't live without them. One has fullscreen app, the other the debuggers, loggers, and other task monitoring apps.

When I go to a new assignment/position, I always bring along a old-style PCI video card! Most places have older monitors lying around anyway; I can get myself up-and-dual-running in no time.
I have been known to start a dual-monitor trend on occasion...

exactly! graphic debugging need at least 2, for my case one desttop and one notebook.
remote debugging, this is to speed up the work, otherwise funny problem, odd problem are hard to debug.

I use the primary monitor for the good stuff (browsing CP, reading blogs, VC) and the secondary for junk like email and VSS.
I have the two sitting side-by-side, but I orient the virtual desktop like this:
+---+
| 1 |
+---+
+---+
| 2 |
+---+ So to move the cursor to the right monitor, I move the mouse down. This way I can still slam the mouse to the top-right corner of the mouse pad to reach the [X] button on an app that's maximized on the primary monitor. The only bad part is that I have to aim carefully for the Taskbar, since it's at the bottom of monitor 1, which is in the middle of the virtual desktop.
On the upside, when someone else comes to use my system, I get to see them freak out trying to move the cursor to the second monitor.

It could be worse. One of the guys I work with mouse's with his left hand, and reverses the buttons It's really jarring when he's logged-in on our lab machines (he'll tend to leave the mouse on the right side of the keyboard in that case) .
Did I mention he's color-blind, and sets the desktop to black ?

Yeah, that's why I use Maxthon for CodeProject and FireFox for everything else.
