PDC, VSLive, SIGGRAPH, etc etc etc ........
I think I'm going to get a job with a company and just keep convincing them to send me to conferences. Then, if there are no conferences for a couple of weeks, I'll just go on vacation. That would be the life

You are crazy, but I have to agree... That would be live at it's best.

Your are supposed to get your company to pay for you to go, never pay out of your own pocket! They pay for us to go here.

Please send an email to my boss and letting know that! He'll find your comment very amusing.

Hmmmmm ... Go to PDC or be with my wife when she gives birth to our first child ...
C'mon people help, me out here
Seriously though, not going because my wife's due date is in middle of PDC.

I hope it could be in India.

all right, it is first thing in the morning, i have a thumping headache, and my local checkout of the code seems to be deeply broken, so perhaps i am feeling a little bloody minded and unhelpful
i have sort of worked out what PDC is from reading the other comments, but by its self the term does not have any meaning to me.
perhaps after many years of practice i am now a "real" programmer, and thus i need to get out more?

Or, if you don't know what it means, then you probably are not going in the first place ... But your comment is still equally valid

I'd love to go and it seems to me that Edinburgh would be the natural venue for Microsoft to hold it in. I can't understand why it's off in some other city in another country that it's not really convenient for anyone to get to.
Or am I slightly biased...?

When I was at TechEd 2001 there was a form at the end of the conference for suggestions for future locations. I put down Edinburgh, but thinking about it I cannot think of any single venue that would be large enough. Even the EICC would be too small.
Perhaps if the hired out Murrayfield and put up partitions over the field and flooring down then it might be okay.....

Bah!
Would the SECC in Glasgow be any more practical?

As much as I would love to go, the cost of attendance for those outside the USA is a little bit of a deterrance...

It's quite expensive a plane ticket to get to the PDC.
I have the same problem, although I love to experience the PDC once in a lifetime. I simply don't have the money to buy a ticket

Same here Eddie...
Maybe if we could get enough Aussies together we could do a charter/group thing to PDC one year?

As much fun as it sounds, it just doesn't make sense from the perspective of a practicing applications programmer. Or at any rate, Microsoft's promotional material doesn't make a case for it. I cannot justify research, either to myself or to those who would pay for it, on tech that won't stand a chance of being deployed (in any form, much less its current form) for more than 18 months.
That said, i'll happily read about others' experiences - so the 7 of you who do go, please post lots about it!

I'm hoping that MSDN's Channel 9 [^] will have lots of videos of the PDC and hopefully lots of the content to download.
At least that way I can see all the cool things that I won't get to play with for two years.
