I have absoulutely no problem what so ever running either version of Visual Studio. 2005 or 2003. The only one I have a problem with is Orcas.

This is the first weekly poll I have been unable to respond to! Grrr! I have no Vista, can't see any justification for buying it, and couldn't afford it if I did. There is nothing compelling in it that I've seen anywhere, and nothing can justify the outrageous cost. I won't be getting a chance to use it until my computer self destructs and I'm forced to buy a new one.

Tell me about it. My wife's been using it, but i just can't. I'm almost tempted to start a tangent thread on how the roadsigns advertising scenic pull-offs are all tagged Vista in CA...

Funny – that’s how I ended up buying may last two systems; the previous two self destructed. I hope that Vista has better industry support, etcetera, before I am forced to use it. I expect it will be a major investment, because I believe many of my tools will need to be updated or replaced. I hate it when a new OS makes perfectly good software obsolete.

I'd send you a legal copy of Vista but I just couldn't; I consider you a friend.

Maybe you are right =)
Anyway, not is this poll a bit OT ??
This is a developer site, and the poll dont said nothing about the WinVista API only the external features, so if we talk about external features so Beryl is a good candidate for fight with it.
From the developer perspective of course that the Win plataform is still better, but MONO is getting better and better.
Cheers

No. CP is all about Windows technologies.
Marcos Meli wrote: This is a developer site, and the poll dont said nothing about the WinVista API only the external features, so if we talk about external features so Beryl is a good candidate for fight with it.
The new UI is just a tiny part of the new features in Vista, so beryl can be compared only to Avalon.
Marcos Meli wrote: MONO is getting better and better
.NET is just a framework. Windows (and many other MS products) provide an incredibly complete and consistent application platform, that allow you to develop any kind of product with a pretty small set of integrated tools.
Does Mono (and any other Linux-related technology) provide such an advanced platform? I think not.
BTW, this is the problem of Linux: inconsistency and fragmentation. But we're really OT now.

Did you check the upper left banner or the categories, this is clearly a developers site.
Dario Solera wrote: The new UI is just a tiny part of the new features in Vista, so beryl can be compared only to Avalon.
I agree here with you, and beryl can only compete in 3 of the poll points: the GUI, the Usability and the Sidebar

You are right we are going completely off topic, but is the spirit of the site to discuss about what we think, I think that we target the OS via an API, now mostly of us are using .NET to do so, i.e. we consume the OS features via the .NET API and I know of a lot of Apps that the .NET binary compiled in windows run on linux (if the app dont use Win32 calls)
So I think that MONO is helping to fill the gap in the Linux dev world.
And the last thing:
Dario Solera wrote: BTW, this is the problem of Linux: inconsistency and fragmentation. But we're really OT now
I was thinking that for years, but now I see a bit clear the inconsistency and fragmentation is the bad schedule, performance and promises that we hear from M$ they said:
"We will build a completely managed OS"
"We will create a OS with a new FS"
"Our operation system will be hard to crack"
"Our operation system will the most secure in the world"
So where is the inconsistency ??
Sorry for talk in that way, I´m a bit bad in english, and I hate Vista so so much that I cant resist to post that.. sorry.

In otherwords... Microsoft Development. Yes, others are here as "side development issues", though you are likely to loose even the OT and non-MS discussions if you advertise in the MS discussions. I am cross-platform, but I don't bring the Linux discussions here, only the Windows discussions. I take the Linux discussions where they will do me the most good for my project -- as apposed to taking the discussion where you will just make everyone annoyed at you.
There is a can of RAID around here somewhere.... hmmmmm

I was wanting to said that this site is for Windows Developers !! This poll is not for developers. I´m not the unique saying that, check a bit up in the other thread =(
The problem was that Dario said: "No. CP is all about Windows technologies." and so I remark the "development" part.
Anyway sorry to the people that dont want this, I´m a WinXp fan !! and ex Microsoft fan, but Vista is too much for me. I´m an open source .Net developer, so I only post my opinion here I dont frequent linux boards, so this is a good place to post that for me.
Sorry for my english, but what means RAID ?
Maybe all us need another choice in the Poll, something like:
"I dont use vista" or "I dont like vista so I dont use it"
Best Regards

I think many people have said they are fans of XP. As developers, however, many of us cannot tell our customers "never buy vista, we won't support you, go jump in a lake, we hate it." Sure, you can post that rant in a forum here, but if your customers force you, you go. Some are proactive, we know our customers will eventually go because they have a contract with MS to provide software for a very long time. Currently that means Vista. Given a choice between continuing to work, or finding another job, I work.... That may be a different choice in the open source community, I only do that in my free time.
Marcos Meli wrote: so I only post my opinion here
There is a saying about what you shouldn't do in a swimming pool that comes to mind, but I expect that its meaning would be lost. So, leave it with, don't insult the primary function of a board with secondary interests. It is wonderful you can have .Net under Linux, Mono is nice, but it still isn't the primary function of this board, which is Microsoft Technology driven development. When the board changes, then we change, or go elsewhere.
Marcos Meli wrote: Sorry for my english, but what means RAID ?
A very, very, very bad joke. I run RAID servers (Redundant Array of Independant Disks), and Raid is also a product for spraying insects.
Marcos Meli wrote: Maybe all us need another choice in the Poll, something like:

That was a while back. Check all the previous polls[^]
-> Do you plan to use Vista's new APIs in your applications?
-> When will you upgrade to Vista?
-> Vista has gone Gold. Are you excited?
etc. If we asked the same question every week, it would be a pretty boring place...

Ok so. But is not my customers what I must defend I must defend my sanity !! :P . Maybe is better to live with peace of mind that with money :P just my latin view :P
Maybe I have a completely different vision from here in Argentina, I dont thing that my customers go so fat, in fact near all the enterprises in argentina run Windows 2000 in the workstations and some 2003 in the servers, the win vista is a lot of cost for the users fun, i.e. I dont think that the managers feel that buying WinVista they get better productivity, only more time playing the solitarie :P
You are right maybe when someone feels that dont fit in any place must go away, I will keep it in mind.
My last word is a new sorry, and I will try to learn to write in english :P (maybe my words dont sound good) and to dont be so pasionate about what I think
Nice to talk to you.

A graphical polish does not an OS make.
(And I've tried Beryl. It is pretty but largely just a graphics demo at this point.)
