KR,
I don't want to have to install the AccessDatabaseEngine on any PC I might use. The whole point of the application is to place it on a portable drive and run it from there. In theory if I'm storing data in a local data store I should be able to access it without having to clutter up the host PC with other assemblies.

FYI - The exact exception error is: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

Thanks for the comment, but I think you missed the point.
I took the entire VB project including the Access database and copied it to a USB drive. I started the XP copy of Visual Studio 2008 and opened the project there. When I pressed the F5 button to run the project I would get an Exception saying the Access database was not accessible.
I could not use the database at all until I installed the AccessDatabaseEngine onto the XP machine.
The only difference between the two PCs is: One has the Microsoft Access 2010 application installed and the XP PC doesn't.
I think there is some reference I need to install.

Why do I have to install an Access Database engine?
I was under the impression if you added the proper namespaces dealing with Databases the framework would allow the usage of databases in the back end of an application.

No cigar. Still get the same error.
Geez! how hard is it to write a simple query to return a value from a DataTable?

Thank you.
Can you give me a hint on how to use a similar query where it takes the strPC variable and if it finds a match returns the PCID number?
This worked once when I had a prefilled data table. I cleared the DB table and entered in just one record. Then it started giving me the aforementioned error.
All data is stored in a data set that is loaded from an Access database.

In the beginning PCID was an auto number field, but if both tables are empty then you can't establish relationships between them. For some reason when you add some data into a row that contains an auto number field and save it to the data table contained in the data set the auto number field inside the data set is not incremented. The auto number field will contain a zero. The second column will contain the item I entered. Hence incrementing the ID keys manually.

When the tables are loaded into the data set both are empty. If I add an item to the PC data table it should auto increment to one, but when I look at the information stored in the data set the row returned in 0 PC item. Instead of 1 PC item. Table 2 is related to table 1 using the PCID field. So if there is no ID in table1 in the data set how can I relate it to table 2's PCID field unless I generate them myself.

If I'm following this right. I want to find the last number used in the PCID field. In this case the PCID field is calculated based on the last one in the table. For example: 1 - Item1, 2 - Item2 and so on. If I use the Max() function it would return 2; I add one to that to get the next ID number in the sequence 3.

Yes, it is a long integer. At first I wanted to use an AutoNumber field, but updating the DataSet inside memory and them transferring that information back to the database proved to be more trouble than me incrementing the ID number myself.

SA,
Strange answer: Was the question somehow unclear? I'm proceeding on the assumption that is was.
To clarify: Using the Shell32.dll I read the metadata from: After_the_Storm_23-Jan-2013.docx. Shell32.dll returned the following metadata:
0: Name: After_the_Storm_23-Jan-2013
1: Size: 11.4 KB
2: Item type: Microsoft Office Word Document
3: Date modified: 1/23/2013 4:49 PM

5: Date accessed: 1/23/2013 4:49 PM

To me this is binary data contained inside the file itself. I want to create an application where I can change the information in tag number 20 from Authors: Unused_Email_Address@someplace.net to Authors: Current_Email_Address@theotherplace.com.
This information is placed inside the file when it is created by the application itself. In this case MS-Word. If the data can be written; it can be modified or changed. My educated guess would be that the writing of metadata would be a function inside the System.IO Namespace, but so far I haven't been able to find any information on how developers can write their own metadata into the files their applications create, or if it is even possible using Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2008.
Thanks,
MRM
