Have you defined the Connection String in your web.config?
Another problem I see in your code is the sql query. You are missing an = (equals to) symbol
string cmdStr = "Select count(*) from Registration where username='" + TextBox1.Text + "'";

my 5 - This can be achieved by any programming language available as you said.. There were days when this question was relevant, and it can be relevant depending on the type of problem you are trying to solve. There is an article by Joel Spolsky [http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/08/01.html], which talks about the importance of knowing what your programming language can do before you choose it to solve your problem - not relevant in this case - nevertheless, a good read.

Check if the 3rd party class generator itself has options to do that.

First of all, I cannot help you with this code dump. My answer was very specific to your question as to how to change the master page file dynamically (if at all that was the question), and that as explained can be done in the Pre_Init event of the page (and that alone can be done) - What I again assumed that, you will know where to put the code. It has to be put in the page you requested from a previous page. I can see a lot of issues with the code you dumped over here (for instance opening of an SQL connection in a page - did you put this code in Pre_init?, and then have you ever heard of SQL injection attacks and how to avoid it?), and I am not going into more specifics here. And I am not sure what you are trying to achieve - sorry.

yes fahadsheikhji.. I though so.. All you have to set the MasterPageFile property of the page to the path/name of the Master file you want to change. It has to be done in the Page_PreInit handler. Hope this helps.

Thanks Christian for answer and the link - though the link does not have anything that I was looking for. I dont have a problem finding out all the selected checkboxes in the GridView, and I dont have to rely on the generated asp.net ids for the control. The problem is in elegantly getting one of the column values of the selected row. Though, I have the solution, I am not sure if it's an elegant way of doing it.

I dont understand when u said "when u use session".. You were redirected to the same page when u used tabs is just because sessions were used internally.. Probably you never realized that sessions are already being used..

How did you host the WCF service? In the IIS or simply as a command line app or as a windows service?
I suggest you try to access your WCF service using the "wcftestclient" from your desktop.
OPen Visual Studio command prompt (in admin mode) and type "wcftestclient". A client application will open up. See if your WCF service can be accessed through this.

haha - I don't know about the so called other experts who lie in here :) So no comments on that. I have seen you post great replies to even the most trivial questions - hence I like you for that, and I have seen you advising others not to post mere comments as 'solutions'. And when I saw you, yourself doing what was told not to do, I just reminded you about it - no big deal. People do look up to you in here, and want to learn from you. "With great fan-base, comes greater responsibility" :) cheers

Hi Mohan.. i have written 2 articles on modifying docx files using OpenXML APIs in C#. This might give you a heads up on how to write some start-up code for programatically modifying the contents of a docx using OpenXML APIs. And for the PDF part - I dont think so there are any services available through the OpenXML API to create PDF files (not sure though now) - You may have to rely on the word interop dlls or Sharepoint 2010 services to achieve this..

I don't see any solution to the problem what the user has posted about - I could see only a sarcastic comment about the website questioning the intention of the original developers who developed the site the specific way without knowing the reasons behind it! You of all people should be responsible enough in posting "solutions" like this..

I suggest you try to solve this problem (atleast try) on your own, and then if you get stuck on something, you can ask that specific doubt to someone here. There will many willing to help you with that - instead of trying to get all your work done by somebody else..

Ya open the file devevn.exe.config in Visual studio or any xml editor you have, and then change the Crystal Report version numbers as described in the link. Make sure that you first take a backup of the devevn.exe.config file before changing it.

Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0 folder is available only if you have VS 2010 installed in your system
In case if have it installed, check in the Program (x86) folder (if your OS is Windows 7)

Hey Pashad, this would have been a lot of hard work trying to collect all this. Really nice and helpful. I am going to bookmark it now.
One suggestion though - You can try to compact the whole contents in a better way and make it scroll friendly and pleasing to the eye. Now there are a lot of spaces between every line.

Alan, I guess you have successfully overcome one mountain of a situation to convert VS 2010 projects to VS2008 - congrats. I think now it remains with the internals of the Crystal Reports - probably the backward compatibility part of it. If you can throw some light on the type of error you got during runtime, probably someone can help you.
I am not sure if this will help you, check it out : http://www.telerik.com/support/kb/reporting/general/converting-reports-from-various-versions-of-crystalreports.aspx

Alan, as i suspected, the converter probably does not understand the InstallShield related files. I am not aware of any convertor which takes care of Installshield related files (maybe SAKryukov can help you out here). Alternately what you can try is to remove only the InstallShield related project (.isproj and any other related files) from the solution, and have them newly created for your VS 2008 project environment.
About the errors even after successful conversion - well, I cant comment on that!

I know it is not trivial. As I said, I got a few Visual Studio 2010 projects in a laptop where I had only Vs 2008. I made the change, it did open up for me - and it was not an empty solution by any means (cmon! :)).. Since it did work for me, I did not investigate further. Maybe I ll do that and let you know.

Allan, I suggest you try out the automated solution provided by SAKryukov. Maybe that project have handled the .isproj conversion too - worth a try

I did put this here because, it did work for me when I tried it recently. All I did was the .sln change and it did open up even the projects for me peacefully. I guess for a large application there might be more settings which has to be changed.

I am sorry I never heard of an .isproj. Some research showed it is an InstallShield related file. The solution worked for me as I was having .vdproj as the installation related file and it was backward compatible. I guess you will have to go the hard way -
- Either create a fresh VS 2008 solution and reimport all your VS 2010 projects to it.
- Another way worth a try is to remove only the InstallShield related project (.isproj and any other related files), and have them newly created for your VS 2008 project environment.

Are you trying to get the query string value from the URL? On the server-side, if you require to get the value of a query string, use the syntax
string qValue = Request.QueryString["user"];

Is your edmx file in a different project?
If that is the case, do add a reference of it to your web project and recompile the whole project It should work.
If the above doesnt work still, then you will have to change the connection string in web.config manually
Replace res://*/ with res//NameOfDLLoftheProjectwhereEDMXlies.dll//NorthwinEntities.csdl
i.e wherever you see "*" in your connection string, replace it with the name of the assembly of the EDMX project.
