I think the issue is really with the setup. Seems VS 2008 always puts in .net whether you want it or not. I will now look at the options for removing it from my setup.

Obvious answer, but why is it failing on the 4.5 check?

After more web searching I found that there appears to be a bug in Visual Studio that make the older version of the CA run on an upgrade, not the new one. (I am currently running 2008.) Does anyone know how to make the upgrade run the NEW CA instead of the OLD CA? I really need it to run the new one....

I have looked at them in Orca, but I cannot tell if something is indicating not to run on updates. I compared the Orca information to that of the original version install that does work properly and they look the same to me. Any idea what they should indicate for upgrades? I see something in the InstallExecuteSequence table that appears to be call the CA (_2C3D43E8_27F8_4B53_A3CA_ED08887E6DD9.install for example) that has a condition of $C__12E1A32E7866D3A3DC428685C3FB09FD>2. I assume this means run the CA when something is greater than 2. I have no idea if this is the CA or not, nor do I have any idea what the 2 indicates.

I am not very familiar with the installs. Where would I find the log files?

Right - that is the idea. But my question is what is the best way to do this? It seems like I should start with the Application Updater code, but modify it to run the download, then have empty methods for the update events. And then when it is done do the command line install. Does this sound like the proper way or is there another way to do this better?

What I am trying to do is add software to the Auto update process that will download the udpates, then run the install of the application instead of updating just pieces of the application, that way I can be sure that files that are not a part of the actual VB project (such as databases) are updated just as they were prior to auto updating.

I think part of our problem is that we are missing the call to CoInitializeSecurity on the client side. I would like to specify the user/password in the authinfo structure, but I can't find example of how to do this in VB6 (old code, I know). All the examples I have found for VB6 just pass a 0 for the authinfo value, not a filled in structure.

What is different about DCOM in Windows 7 vs XP? This used to work without a problem in XP, but something is obviously different in Windows 7. I am sure I am not the only one out there who has had ths problem.
Does anyone know how to correctly set the security parameters or another way to correct this?

So I guess my original question still stands - how do I get CoInitializeSecurity (or DCOM) to work when there is no domain and I have a client user that is not a user on the server?

I guess my terminology of "do not authorize" was not correct - I meant "no authorization" so any user would work. Which, of course, does not work.
The manual you mention says that for workgroups all users must have the same permissions on both server and client. It then says "If both computers are in one and the same domain, user administration is much simpler. The permissions for individual access are then verified over the domain server."
This is where my problem lies. We do not have a domain. We also cannot have duplicate users on the client and server.
Is there no way to get this to work? If I use the SOLE_AUTHENTICATION_INFO, can I just leave the domain out?

This did not work. It does not appear that the application is releasing the database even with this logic. There must be some way to force the database to close.

Here is the query that I extract from the database.
<pre lang="text">"INSERT INTO [CHRTV-SUB1] ( DSRECNUMFIX, SumOfACV, SumOfAHELO, SumOfARTY, SumOfAVLB, SumOfBT, SumOfCAIR, SumOfCSHELO, SumOfLAL, SumOfPTAIR, SumOfRCCTAIR, SumOfUTHELO, EQTABBR, EQTRECNUM, V_CATORD, [SESSION] )
SELECT CHRTV.DSRECNUMFIX, Sum(CHRTV.ACV) AS SumOfACV, Sum(CHRTV.AHELO) AS SumOfAHELO, Sum(CHRTV.ARTY) AS SumOfARTY, Sum(CHRTV.AVLB) AS SumOfAVLB, Sum(CHRTV.BT) AS SumOfBT, Sum(CHRTV.CAIR) AS SumOfCAIR, Sum(CHRTV.CSHELO) AS SumOfCSHELO, Sum(CHRTV.LAL) AS SumOfLAL, Sum(CHRTV.PTAIR) AS SumOfPTAIR, Sum(CHRTV.RCCTAIR) AS SumOfRCCTAIR, Sum(CHRTV.UTHELO) AS SumOfUTHELO, CHRTV.EQTABBR, CHRTV.EQTRECNUM, EQPMT.[5_CATORD], CHRTV.SESSION
FROM (CHRTV INNER JOIN (SELECT [EQTRECNUM], [SESSION], [5_CATORD]
FROM [EQUIPMNT], (SELECT * FROM [EQTCAT_ORD] IN [REFERENCELOCATION] WHERE [TREATY] = 'CFE') [REFEQTORD]
WHERE ([EQUIPMNT].[EQTCAT] =[REFEQTORD].[CAT])) [EQPMT]
ON (CHRTV.EQTRECNUM = EQPMT.EQTRECNUM) AND (CHRTV.SESSION = EQPMT.SESSION))
WHERE (([CHRTV].[SESSION]=[SESSIONPARAMETER]) AND
([CHRTV].[OOVSTATUS]<>'X'
))GROUP BY CHRTV.DSRECNUMFIX, CHRTV.EQTABBR, CHRTV.EQTRECNUM, EQPMT.[5_CATORD], CHRTV.SESSION"</pre>
Then the code replaces the [SESSIONPARAMETER] and [REFERENCELOCATION] with the appropriate values. The code performs the following code to execute the resulting sql statement:
<pre lang="text"> Public Function ExecStatement(ByVal sql As String) As Boolean
Dim cmd As New OleDbCommand
Dim rtn As Boolean = False
Dim closeOnExit As Boolean = Not _connOpen
Try
If Not _connOpen Then OpenConnection()
cmd.Connection = _cnn
cmd.CommandText = sql
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
rtn = True
Catch ex As Exception
Throw New Exception(String.Format("Failed to execute statement. {0}SQL: {1}{0}Message: {2}", vbCrLf, sql, ex.Message))
Finally
If closeOnExit Then CloseConnection()
End Try
Return rtn
End Function
</pre>
As I mentioned earlier, in the non-ADO version, when the sql statement is executed I get rows returned where the OOVSTATUS is an empty string (the check of <>"X" works) but in this ADO.Net version the rows that have an empty string for OOVSTATUS are not returned. I have also verified through some test code that the data is empty, not null.
The connection string for both versions is:
"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source={0};User ID=admin; Password=", DBPhysicalFile()
