I can think of two reasons. 1) You can create a custom ID of your choice
2) You can avoid duplication of the ID 100%.
But this might increase the write time to table by a small amount. I cant exactly tell you about the performance in terms of time taken.
And, coming to the other point you mentioned in the question,about using the vb app.
That can be done too. But i think this would take more time in terms of performance compared to the one created using the stored procedure.
ZeeroC00l
25-May-11 8:06am

Well in that case i suggest you go for stored procedure. You can generate your own custom ID and assign it. And that can be incremented in every insert / any other operation.

Can you be a little more clear about what this means :

Get the username and password from the text box and replace it instead of the DOMAIN_NAME\\USER and PASSWORD. Thats all you need to do.

But again a few more questions were raised on GUID id's.
Since these GUID id's are pretty huge in size, and they go against the rule of thumb for clustered index key, and it can fragment and page split the data / index page, In your opinion what makes it more advisable to use?

I don't Have sql installed, so I can give you an idea as to how you can do this.
Looking at the Table you mentioned, you want as many - as the number of weight of the course.
Use RIGHT / LEFT operator to get the number of - 's as in the weight column and then concatenate it with the category name field.

A small question regarding the same,
is this behavior because of the fact that the intrinsic types don't invoke default constructors by themselves ?
And I tested the bool type without initializing, every time i compile and run it i end up getting a default value of 191 for bool type. Any reason why ? If it were to be random why not get a different value every time I compile and run ?

You can either make use of a general catch block or handle the standard one seperately. Its up to you.
As Mentioned by @Marc in the above answer, however you handle the catch block, make sure that that content inside the catch block wont throw another exception.
ZeeroC00l
13-May-11 10:06am

That's why i have mentioned Multiple Catch blocks.
What i suggest is Make sure you have Catch blocks for some standard exception that you expect from the code and for the rest use a general catch block.
catch( InvalidOperationException e)
{
}
//few more specific exceptions
catch
{
// handle general Exception
}

Well First of all, you can't assign space to everything. What if the field is a date/time field ? In that case spce wont be meaningless.
Hypothetically, say if your cell contains space, then you cant check for NULL in the where condition. And what if the number of space is more than 1 ? That would make things more complex

I cant see your query that has LIKE % used. Could you paste here that query too so that we can look into as to what is wrong.
And since you are using '' and using text box to get details from the user, i don't thing .ToString()function is necessary.

Well, first of all its really tough to get access to your script files in the server as apache has a really good security measure towards this.
There are tools like Turck MMCache, CodeLock, which will help you encode your script files before deploying them on the server. Which can come in handy for the purpose that you are looking for.
http://turck-mmcache.sourceforge.net/index_old.html#encoder
But the MMCache tool is for linux environment. So i would suggest you encrypt your file in Linux and then deploy them on any platform you choose to.

Yea, there seems to be no self extract utility for tar.gz file in Windows. But if you are targetting just the unix users then you can always create a custom extractor for the tar.gz file.

You just need to open a file in binary mode and write the contents to it. That should serve the purpose.

Well if i got your question right, On button click you want to open a new form with a data grid in it which will populate the text box and then you want to edit those details in the new form.
For doing that, in most simple way, create a new form insert the data grid controller and put the necessary text box items and use the above mentioned code segment method to populate the text box in them. All you need to do is to make that form visible on button click and then the rest can be handled in the new form itself just like you did in this form.
