I left a solution below. This is using Asp.Net MVC way of doing. Not sure if you are working with Webforms.

Your question is little confusing. As per my understanding you want to know how to find the number of days between two dates? Is that what you want?

Not clear. So, are you loading the XML in a gridview? When you delete a record in gridview, you are expecting the same record to be deleted from the XML and update the gridview. AM I correct?

Nothing wonder here. Have you ever studied/did any programming? Do you know anything about operators in JAVA? Get your textbook and study before you ask in any forum. Sorry, if I am rude.

This is not a big magic, You can simply solve this in .cs file by
DateTime dt = Convert.ToDateTime("06/10/2014 12:00:00 AM"); // if the database value is of DateTime type
lblShortDate.Text= dt.ToShortDateString();
It's not appropriate to do this conversion in Javscript, any specific reason?

Do you mean you want to use a <asp:label> in side a table?<br>
<br>
If so, you need to use <asp:table>, which is a server side table and can add the <asp:label> control to this table,<br>
<br>
protected void Page_Init(object sender, EventArgs e)<br>
{<br>
foreach (TableRow row in this.Table1.Rows)<br>
{<br>
foreach (TableCell cell in row.Cells)<br>
{<br>
// to add control<br>
Label lblID= new Label();<br>
lblID.Text = "Some Value";<br>
cell.Controls.Add(lblID);<br>
}<br>
}<br>
}

doing or not-doing? Depends on the native of your application.
Webmethods:
Goods - Much easier to implement security for the call, JSON can be used
Doesn't any life cycle(Page life-cycle is a pain)
Logic and functionality are not localized and reusable.
Bad - Posting forms to webmethods is sometimes Hectic.

What is your task here? 1) Do you trying to update? or 2)Do you need help in displaying the error message?
If you problem is no2. where do you want to display the error message?
You can always use
using System.Diagnostics;
then,
Debug.WriteLine("");
To display errors(any messages) within the code. Use the Exception class to work with errors.
Please spend few minutes reading the link http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173160%28v=vs.80%29.aspx.
Someone will provide you the solution if you can clearly state your problem.

This is what I meant. My view is that this is an opportunity for him to learn a new tech..

This looks like a very basic on-line store. I suggest to do with PHP & MySQL. Even if you don't have much experience in PHP, you can still learn because you are doing this for your school.. Play around with JQuery and advanced techs.

This is fine. May be you create a table in the database(with the fields mentioned by losmac.) and feed each user 'activity' to the database manually. For example, if a new record is added to the table then, Add a new row to the 'activity' table.
losmac, 'datetime' of the event should be there

The better approach for logging error & process is to use Log4Net.
see this link http://logging.apache.org/log4net/

If you reading from a text file, then it is very easy to manipulate the test file with "TextReader" class rather than using stream. see here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.textreader.aspx

By default if a node has child and if you click on the (+) you will see the child nodes. you don't need any explicit code to do this.
Also, If you add a child you will automatically get "mouse click" on the specific node. That is any node with child has the following by default,
1) double click on text
2) click on (+)
is this helpful? otherwise you need to explain your question clearly.
