At first look this question makes no sense. A web service can be made of several files in several ways, there is nothing fixed, but the definition of them that you can get from the server in most cases, and that is the WSDL file.

As to the "first look", it still makes no sense, because — pay attention — language, platform or technology is not tagged. If at least something like that was specified, it could make some sense...

Well, an asmx is just one file in the project, and when it is compiled, there are other files too - and there is also the self-hosted version. And the java approach is also much complicated than that.

The only problem the might be not the only file types. With Java, usually *.class files are used. If you tell just the file name patterns like *.asmx, it won't tell much, and this is often configurable.
The question really makes little sense (and formally speaking, it is totally incorrect) without the context. Probably, only some specific service types were discussed on lectures (did you attend them? :-) and this context was just implied.

I don't know if such questions are typical. If they are, it would look very suspicious. It would not look like real education; it looks more like technical "training", which has very little value, if any. After some CodeProject experience I am sure that many member students get very weak or even fake education, which is not useless, but even have considerable negative impact (illusion of knowledge or understanding is one of them, much worse than lack of some knowledge and understanding).

OK, good. Be careful with your school. I'm not sure you can trust those teachers. However, this is true for nearly all schools. Your own brain comes first.

Is the question really "Does anyone know...?"? I'm sure, yes. If fact, many know.
Names: they are all different, depending on the implementation. Purpose: to implement a particular Web Service.
