I second that. It's generally nice to see the sigs, but occasionally when my connection is being extra slow (or certain persons are showing off with full-screen sigs) the option to browse without them would be nice.

This is for 12 months later or so. How about making the Lounge a web service. Thus we can all write our own Lounge clients to send/recv Lounge threads.

I assume your thinking along the lines of an AIM or MNS Messenger type service here. That could be usefull to see if artical writers or SysAdmins are online to send an instant message to them. Sometimes board posts answers can be a bit delayed.

Exactly!
But that's just part of it. It'll also let you view Lounge and other Forum posts, will let you post stuff and search stuff.
You can also view articles, perhaps even submit articles.

Basically turning CP into a program running a web service. Sounds great, if anyone does do this gimmi a shout and i'll gladly be a beta tester.
BTW it'll have to be cross platform wont it, at least with the HTML based CP everyone can view it, getting this service out to the masses running Unix and MacOS could prove a daunting task.

Actually, the reasoning behind Microsoft's use of SOAP and XML in their Web Service idea was to provide access to all. You see, any SOAP client can access and consume a web service. So a UNIX or MacOS client could access the proposed CP Web Service if someone developed an app for them. In MSDN articles on Web Services, they specifically state that Web Services can be used by clients on other platforms as long as they use SOAP. Hey, you could even use straight HTTP to access a Web Service, as shown when you visit an asmx file. It gives code as to how to consume a Web Service using SOAP or HTTP.
Just wanted to clear up a little misconception that I have seen in many places...

I understand the server/service side will be accessible by any SOAP/XML clients but what I was saying was that clients would have to be developed for all platforms which makes it more complicated than just having one website with some DHTML. I still think it would be a good idea though.

Sounds like your idea is a perfect thing to learn from.
Give it a go Nish, you can write a series of articles on its development. (Just make sure that all the clients have to display CP's ads otherwise Chris will start losing money)

For some mysterious reason this article did not appear in the last-10 updates box on the front page and I almost missed it. Luckily an anonymous person posted on the article forum and thus I saw it in the question-time box and came here. But it still puzzles me as to why it did not come in the last-10 updates list

Count the number of articles posted on the 28th, and count the number of slots available in the 'last 10 posted'. (articles are ordered alphabetically in the last, so some will drop off)
Also: I sent you an email saying your article had been posted, so I'm surprised you say you were unaware of it.

I am not surprised at all Chris. I never got that email. My mail server has been behaving weird for the last 2-3 days

I also like it when new CPians actually think I am part of the CP staff [I use the word "we" when saying stuff like "we'll update it when we next have time"]

Can we have a box which shows when the last post on any forum on CP was made.
Like "Last post :- Michael Martin - Lounge - 6 minutes ago"
The good thing about this is if CP is quiet for 45 minutes, then we know it is indeed quiet.
I have noticed that there are extreme lull periods
Or perhaps this :-

Have a box that says
"14 posts & 1 new article in the last hour"
Thus we can see how active CP is...

Look at the 'Question Time' box. Now hover your mouse over each entry. Do the same with the lounge.
I'm guessing that if there was a big signn on the front page saying 'all's quiet' then it would stay quiet, whereas if we had a sign saying 'things are going off' then it would stay busy. Having lists like this (and similarly: most viewed article, most popular thread etc) are all self perpetuating and don't (IMO) add value.

If we have an idle time counter, people might the think let it stay idle or they think like, lets see how far this'll go
But I must say the strain will be too much for me and I'll restrict the idle time to at most 3 minutes if I can help it .

When someone submits something to submit@codeproject it would be nice if an automatic reply is sent :-
"Thanks for your submission. When we get around to editing it, it shall be posted. Regards, CP team"
or something like that so that the sender knows that his email has been received.
