I don't think the problem is that the font is too small (though it doesn't help), or that the position is bad (although it is). For me at least, it's that i start looking for it at the top of the page, and there are thirty-some links before i get to it. I've actually used the Firefox link-search to jump to it before, but even then the My Bookmarks link gets hit before the Bookmark link.
And yeah, i know i already complained about the clutter after the redesign kicked in, and if i wasn't using such a small screen it wouldn't be a problem for me. But still, i do use a small screen, and even if i bought a bigger one, i wouldn't bring it in the kitchen with me, and so i'd still be stuck right now looking at the first page of an article, with a scant 3rd of my browser's client area showing actual article.
But say... that floating bar thing sounds kinda cool.

Hi,
I was just thinking if a calendar of some sort would be useful in here. We get a lot of posts in the Lounge about stuff that Microsoft/Google/AcmeCorp/etc. just released, and it is of course always very easy to miss such announcements (yes, even when they are reposted  ). So, would it be useful to create a calendar, so that users could add events to it? Then I'm talking about events that might be useful for the community, not "My mom's birthday" etc. It should probably also be possible to add events in advance (i.e. "FireFox 3.0 is sceduled for release in xx.xx.2007" - you get the picture...). Rating of events would also be helpful, so events with the highest ratings would appear first in the list of each day. Obviously this could work for events other than product releases, as I said it should be a place for events which would benefit the community.
Does this make any sense?

Yes, probably just similar to the Lounge itself or even more work. A moderator (or many of them...) would probably be a good idea, or perhaps it would only be possible to suggest links/events, but a moderator would have to decide if the event would fit. Anyway, I guess smarter people than me will think of something brilliant

It seems being in the IT field requires mastering that early on in life. Been there, done that. Hence, people's love for CP.
I've actually never used one, but the ones I've seen in other websites has made me wonder why CP doesn't use one.
Also, now that you mention your "laziness", I'm curious to know what your workday is like? Is CP a side-work that you do or does it create enough revenue that you do nothing else? If the latter, is your work mostly webmaster stuff or do you seek out new advertisers and promoters and do the CP promotional bit at IT fairs and such? TMI?

Content, infrastructure (including the ongoing rewrite), legal and business, office management, contests, bugs, forum moderation and managing site abuse, architecture, database management (though Dmitry is less and less willing to let me near SQL anymore), design and graphics (though Will is now providing most of the mockups) plus everything else from helping people with email and lost password problems, disputes, plagarism complaints, talking to publishers, talking to others in the Industry, our advertising systems (and endlesse battles to ensure ads are handled sensitively and appropriately) and general enquiries.
Then I have my morning coffee and really get down to work

The new tag indicates that the messages are new since you last logged in or of that sort, it does not represent read or unread posts.

storing and querying against a timestamp is cheap, doing the same for each of the millions of messages on CP is not. Per message/thread mark read is nice, but doesn't scale well to large sites.

i don't think it will be that resource consuming
1st it will be done on client side
2nd as soon as user click on the link (to open the message) the flag will be stored and queried at the time of refresh/ load of page
3rd it will only check for messages already having new tag at most it need to keep record of 100 or so messages which is already been kept

ok they are not storing tags for new message they are storing time and all the messages posted later show with new mark
and if you have posted any message then it is relaxed by some time

Hopefully, Chris read's this, cause I'm wondering about the new tag and a few others. Regardless of whether I log out or not, the new icon shows up on all messages. Additionally on a page that lists all of the forums along with a bolded message count, the page always says, '* Forums in bold have new messages since 11:00 Monday 2nd October, 2006'. I don't know what's so special about that date and time, but I do know that while I do not logout often, I have logged out several times since that date and time.
