I've got the code for that tucked away somewhere (a more extensive system than merely search and replace) but why? For use in 'No HTML' messages? As an alternative method?

I wouldn't call it a problem, more like a "nice to have". I've seen people occasionally use [code] and [/code], and how tough would it be to switch that to <pre> and </pre> during the submission process?

Why not just add some buttons to the form to wrap the selected text in <pre> or <code> tags? You could also do a replace on &, < and > to replace with &, < and >, to make it easier to post code samples.
EG:

More specifically, the part where a membership should be promoted to
the next level after each year of membership.
Well, mine is still in the same old status,
even after more than 1 yr of membership.
Can u check up the scripts handling this ?
