I am not sure what the "kid-sister friendly" rule means, but the kind of posts I recently see in the Lounge makes me reconsider my participation at CodeProject. Maybe it is time to introduce the "work-safe" rule instead and actually enforce it?
I am not asking this because any of that stuff personaly offends me - it really does not. However, if you search the Interent for my name, there will be quite a few links to CodeProject.com and I don't want to be associated with the kind of discussions we are seeing in the Lounge.

I do all the time and the messages are still there. That is the problem.

The "line" is set to high, IMHO. Threads like: this one[^] or this[^] or this[^] (in fact pretty much any thread started by Michael Martin) do not belong to CodeProject.com and yet they are still here.

I agree that the Lounge should be KSF, but I'm wondering what you expect to happen here? You do see the [Vote to Remove Message] link, right? Do you use it?
I'm not sure that Chris reads every post in the Lounge, so he might not see the posts you are referring to, unless you click that link. You must realize there is no CP person monitoring the Lounge 24/7, so it's not clear what you mean by "actually enforce it". When a problem is reported, it's always taken care of; it just might not happen in real time.

If that's your attitude, then leave. If you really cared about CP, then stay, and work with other CP members to fix this problem.

Yes, and I have never seen anything done about it.

That has not been my experience at all. The Lounge is still full of the posts that do not belong on a site targeted to professional developers

I have been a CodeProject member since 2000 (officially joined in 2001, I think) and still feel it is the best developer community on the web. The Lounge and various Soapbox forums are just ruining that experience.

You seem to be under a misunderstanding here. The lounge is where we go to kick back from being developers. It's the area where you get to blow off steam for a bit, and the lounge is obviously incredibly popular as it's the most active area in the site.

That is pretty much OK with me.

That is *not* OK: "Posting Guidelines: The Lounge is rated PG. If you're about to post something you wouldn't want your kid sister to read then don't post it. No flame wars, no abusive conduct and please don't post ads."

Well, I've not really seen anything today that I wouldn't say to my kid sister, so I guess it's a bit subjective...

See here[^].
Also, as I said, the "kid sister" rule is not clear. Kids are nasty these days I just want to be comfortable with my boss seing the forums I am a member of.

I'm not married to your boss, so she shouldn't be offended by the joke you linked to of mine. BTW - kid sister safety is subjective; I'd say that sexual content was crossing the line, but there's a large gray area for the other posts.

Is anybody forcing your to visit the lounge and the soapbox?
Just use the parts of CP you deem morally fit...
|
|
|
|
|
It doesn't work that way.
The Lounge is the polite zone. It's the area deemed to be a place where you can relax and enjoy knowing something horrible isn't going to come up.
If you use the rule "don't visit what you don't like" then forums degrade to the lowest level of those still willing to participate. Everyone else leaves and moves on.
I'm setting the bar for the Lounge. If the bar is too high then those who wish for a lower bar can go to the SoapBox, or even the Back Room, or find a different site. The Code Project is for developers first and foremost.

Hey, don't blame me. I'm not the one posting the objectional posts in the lounge. I'm neither for nor against it...
I'm just saying that you have a choice.
Pesonally, I think the whole issue is blown out of proportion and that people should have more important stuff to worry about than a few bad jokes.
"Sticks and stones may hurt your bones, but words will never harm you", I think the saying goes.
|
|
|
|
|
One more thing: This has essentially nothing to do with the lounge, so just saying that the stuff should be posted in another forum (and then it would be okay) as Chris says Here[^] is not a solution to the original problem.
The best solution would be - as someone has already pointed out in another post - to have a dedicated joke forum. That way everybody entering that would know right off that stuff posted there is meant to be a joke and should not be taken seriously.
As it is now, I think people are confused as to the purpose of the lounge, the back room and the soapbox and what content goes where...
