trying to break things around here?
FYI: word wrap needs words, not a single sustained guttural
and it won't work inside PRE tags.

A holdover from when I used to do QA, I'm afraid.

Scrollbars would be nice.

On a mobile phone maybe. On a computer screen, I don't want to scroll horizontally.
Keep your (source) lines shorter. Avoid 10-level indentation nestings. Keep things easily readable. etc.

The example given by the OP is a good one. It is a call stack. Stuff like that isn't worth adjusting line breaks to, and can actually make it more difficult to read. You scroll vertically review the important data in each line, then you can scroll horizontally to see more specific information (e.g., line number). A table of data would be another good example. Sometimes horizontal scrolling is useful.

Sometimes, that cannot be avoided, such as with complex XSLT.

yes, when all else fails, it could be useful I guess.

Testing scrollbars...

Begin_AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA_End
Begin_AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA_End
Begin_AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA_End
Ah yes, very nice. Note to self: always use horizontal scrollbars when replying to Luc.

Dang, the scrollbars only worked in the preview. Let me see if this works:

Dang, it wanted to work, but it didn't quite get there.

the mail notification had a hor. scroll bar; the above message on CP does not (FF3), but then that could depend on some settings.
BTW: while posting that, didn't you get a little message box asking "this message seems rather wide and uninformative. Do you really want to post it?"

It got you to inform me that the scrollbars show up in email notifications. Seems informative enough.

Apparently IE8 handles it better. I still have IE7, and there is no scroll bar. Upgrading to IE8 is not yet an allowed option.
I failed to mention that the area for message display does resize with the browser window, but the text width still matches the width of the PRE section. If the code lines are really long, like your example, they and the text outside the PRE tag get irretrievably chopped off at the column margin for the message list. I have a scroll bar for viewing all of your message as I type this reply, but in the regular display, I don't.

Unfortunately you're seeing problems with IE7's non standard rendering. FireFox, Chrome, Safari, IE8 all do the right thing, but getting IE7 to play properly, while not also breaking for the others, is painful and sanity shredding.

This is for Chris
We have wanted to donate robots to the best article prize pool for sometime. We are robot geeks and figured code project code geeks would love to win robots. I posted the question in the lounge to get some feedback. The response was pretty positive and the community suggested I put the idea in front of the man in charge so that is what I'm doing
Here is the thread:

If anyone else in here likes the idea, time to speak up is now :P

You'd like to donate robots? That's the coolest thing. Ever.
Sorry for the delay, I've just arrived home after a vacation. I'll send you an email and we'll work out the fine print.
cheers,

I've placed it under Silverlight but you should be able to do this as well.
I'll make a bug note about the auto-linking.

I've looked several times, and I don't see any place to set a category. It used to be there, but I haven't seen it for the last couple to tips.

You must be using IE 6
I'll try and get that fixed shortly.

Okay I've fixed it locally. It should be good next time Chris updates the site.

I'm tired to see mobile version of site every time I visit it with Firefox nightlies (aka Minefield).
Worse yet, every time I do anything (like voting on poll, going to link) it resets to mobile version and I have to click Full site to see normal page.
Honestly, I have no idea why Minefield useragent is considered to be of mobile client (maybe Fennec used it, but still). This is very lame for a site dedicated to development, including web.

can't you change your browser's user agent? as a work-around, try browsing page "about:config" to get to the settings.
