...for members who have signed up nearly a decade ago and haven't made a single post. Is it really that necessary?
I know i have a personal interest at heart in posting this, but i still wonder.
I can understand it for regulars and for those who have made a post or two, but the accidental name squatters should maybe lose protected status after a whole year with 0 total posts 
I should be able to create a similar name that's not identical to the squatted name, but one which would normally be thrown out by the filter.
I had thought of also sharing some of the "holes" in the system, but a troll might get a hold of my ideas and observations, so i won't.
P.S. I'm a former regular here, so i've known this site for a number of years, on and off... even though my account is quite recent. Big thanks to Chris and all of the staff here at CP. Love you guys

I was thinking about this on the weekend and was actually thinking about changing the rules a little.
Instead of forcing a unique name, I could make it "first in, best dressed" and make it that if you have picked a name, have a confirmed email, and have posted, then you get your name. If, however, you come in after that, or don't have a confirmed email (or whatever else) then you can still post using that name but your name will be dimmed (and possibly, confirmed names will be highlighted).
It would help solve this issue...

Whenever the change comes, I will be the first to make use of it, undoubtedly. I'm kind of tired of the trailing 0 in my name showing up when i'm quoted...
I know that you have more urgent bugs to take care of, so I don't mean to make a big deal of this.. simply wanted to make my situation known 
P.S. My namesake from Italy has been registered since '03... someone who wandered in, downloaded a file, and left, never to return.

Do you have any rules in the system whereby if someone has no activity in their account for 6 months, they are notified, the account will be terminated unless they reactive via a link or by signing in, similar to other forum software.

No, because I often see members who have signed up 5 years ago come wandering back in.
I don't see any value in terminating valid accounts, but I do see value in allowing used names to be recycled.

You could always auto-generate a new name after a year or two, with some warning emails. Then the other members would be free to use that name and the original member would still have their account. Still, if I lost "aspdotnetdev" because of that, I'd probably be a little annoyed. Though if you gave me the warning emails, then maybe I would have every chance to avoid that annoyance.

That would be too much of a disturbance IMHO.
Random names, etc... I believe that one post should be enough to save the user from all that hassle.
Just sorting out long dead, complete non-participants by relaxing the strict filter would be enough to fix the problem as I see it, the problem of file downloaders knocking out blocks of unique names by simply signing up.
As of right now, "Morri" is taken by a nonparticipant, and it would be fine by me as long as <Morri> and M σ r r ı would be still available without hacks or tricks...

Do you guys track IPs at account creation? If so, perhaps the ip block which he is currently accessing from could be used to figure him out before he can be the pain in the arse that he is.

This is not a waterproof solution.
Many people have dynamic IP's (I do at home) meaning I get a new IP every 24 or 36 hours (can't remember exactly).
Further more you run the risk of banning a IP only to discover the offender took a new IP but a regular, behaving member got the banned IP and can no longer access the site (I know I know the chances of this happening are extremely low but still it could happen)

There is no waterproof solution, but it is probably the best one.
The ISP don't renew every nn.nnhours, IPs are recycled after a period of inactivity, and this period is determined by the ISP. The likelihood of two CPians getting the same IP in a shortish period of time is slim but, as you point, non-zero. The probability of two spammers getting the same IP is further reduced.

Not if the offender is behind a firewall, say from a large corp or a University.

Yes, you were and I think it was very unfortunate that he accused you of this without any evidence. I have replied to him and he has apologized. The troll's account has been disabled too, so hopefully it's all good now.

Huh, I always thought those messages that had replies and that got deleted just said "Message Deleted" rather than disappearing.

So did I. I thought deleted messages only were disappeared if they had no replies.
Perhaps the order was...
0) Click reply, begin typing response
1) Message is deleted, has no replies so wiped entirely.
2) finish typing reply, click post
3) messed up tree.
