Chris,
How about reducing server/client load on article bookmarking using a pop-up window rather than reloading the whole article?

How about a separate forum for all the political and war discussions. That way, the Lounge can keep the laid-back feeling it originally had, and the huge threads that invariably result from serious topics won't clog up the Lounge. It would also be different from the Soapbox, in that people will have to stay PG-13.
This is in no way meant to be a punishment, it will just give the serious topics their own space on the site.

An option is to have another forum 'tech talk' that is purely tech/gadget talk. Keep the lounge as is, move it down a notch on the home page, and have the Tech-talk forum have pride of place in order to encourage tech and gadget talk.
Sorry - but I too am a little sick of hearing about GW.

hmm, well that separates things along a completely different line. I was thinking, return the Lounge to a "shooting the breeze" type of forum, not create two new forums out of it.
The things I like to see in the Lounge are "I can't believe this stupid coding error I just did... anyone else ever do this?" or "what's the most underrated movie" along with tech topics like "what hard drive do you all recommend?". All those would be fine in the Lounge. If the forums were separated by tech/non-tech, the "silly error" and "best movie" threads would be overwhelmed by the serious discussion.

I meant to say something when you mentioned this in the Lounge, but forgot. I think that is a wonderful idea.

I think a gadget forum would be great.
Although it's not really the CP style, I'd like to see a gadget a day introduced. Or maybe even a gadget section at CP where people could do a review of a gadget.
I know this is a coding site. But somehow I think a high proportion of users here are into the latest gadgets.
My 2 cents.
As to the 'Serious Discussion Forum' , Why not just ban politics and religion point blank. They same arguements are just being rehashed every 12 months.

Seems that the search results are just that: results. Nobody asked for the link to the message, right?
All my searches in the VisualC Forum have links in the result that open just the messageboards overview

I accidentally started reading Embedded/Mobile (;)) and noticed there are no links there for rating posts. Not that it's a big problem, just thought I'd mention it.

Is anyone aware of an RSS feed for the articles on CodeProject? Or is there any plans of creating one?
Thanks

Nope...instead CP supports Web Service
I believe Chris responded to that question once with "RSS feeds? Oh, that's so 90's" (Taka Muraoka words)
CP has a web service which Taka Muraoka convert into an RSS feed and then just plug into the normal processing.

One of the things that I love about coming to The Code Project (besides reading great articles ) is that you get input from all over the place, however, I sometimes find it hard to guess or know where people are from by just reading their post (unless it's Paul Watson with the nice logo in his sig).
My suggestion is adding to the "My Settings" portion of user options the ability to allow people to show a flag beside their name in their posts (or somewhere that makes sense). So, if a person decides to show (or maybe don't even make it an option for users to reduce the overhead of including this feature) this a little icon of their nationality would appear beside their name in the post listings.
I don't know how easy it would be to find such icons or even make them ... but I think it would be one of those "little things" that adds a lot to the site.
Just a thought,

I found a link (using Google, of course) to a free collection of National Flags Icons[^]
I'd like to submit myself for putting in some time with Photoshop to make a collection of small GIF images from these icons if this suggestion comes to be included in CP (heck, I might just make them to use on my website ).

Perhaps people could specify their home country as well as their current location in their profile??? Just a thought. I think this might have been suggested before Chris. Sorry if it has.

Bit OT but... I have just finished reading Erections to Elections by Pieter-Dirk Uys (Evita Bezuidenhout.) Hilarious and thought provoking book. In it he was flabbergasted at the whole voter registration issue in 1998. You registered where you lived, but most people could only vote where they worked. Yet the rules were you could only vote where you had registered. The fact that that rule only came out after most people had registered was nuts. Many people working in the city but registered back in their "homelands" could not vote then.
Pieter slyly remarked with Zapiros help: Hey Pik (as in Botha), look at that, we were so stupid. We opressed the blacks to stop them voting, but the new government is so much smarter. They stop people from voting through sheer incompetence.
Good book, recommend reading it. Your post just reminded me of it, how people often have a home and work address, one of which they are proud of, the other which they need.
