It is even stranger that so many people cannot find their way to Your Settings[^] , and then scroll down to the checkbox on the right of the page titled "Close my account", and you can close it yourself.

On the home page the recent discussions are shown. Among them are a few spam messages which had been deleted earlier, but still appear in the list. And below each entry:
Quote: null on The Lounge
Ok, null, come down and leave now. Otherwise the CP goon squad will come and show you the door.

Thanks for the report. I've moved your message to Bugs and Sugs. This issue, while not a security issues, has been reported here[^] and we're on it.

I would have done that today. On a sunday afternoon I did not expect someone to work on it.

On the home page there's the discussion area on the right hand side which shows latest messages from lounge. It seems that the area shows also messages that are moderated on in moderation.
At the moment the list contains four messages, all spam but when navigating to lounge, the messages are not there.

Hi,
While looking at this question[^] in the C++ forum I remember answering similar questions many years ago.
Back on March 15, 2008 I answered a similar question by Jeffery Walton[^]. The question was how to determine if a variable/object address was created or being used in the current thread stack.
I am unable to access any part of that conversation...
Re: Determine Location of a Variable[^]
You are sitting on a literal goldmine of advanced C++ and Windows information. There is some *very* high quality information in many of those old posts. And much of it is still relevant. How difficult can it be to serve up old forum conversations? Also; does this mean in 2024 that everything posted this 2018 year will be missing?
Is there a technical reason why these old forum conversations are unavailable?
Best Wishes,
-David Delaune

I suspect it is because of pagination.
Note that whenever you search for a message and click on the one you want, you're always served a whole page with 25 messages (default setting, I've opted for 50).
But since they are sorted by thread/message, where the messages are also shown as a tree, the database would need to sort all the messages until you reach the page it's on before you can select that page.
You would run out of memory for sorting quite quickly.
There are of course ways to lower the impact. The best one is to use PostGreSql, since it supports composite filtering. Which means you can use a sorted index. And serve any page at the same time
But I suspect CP is using SQL Server, where a clustering key sort could do quite a lot for performance. But not enough I'm afraid.
But until I'm told how the database is actually organised, I can only speculate.

We had a slow database query. Fixed up an index and presto, you can see the 'missing' messages.
Make sure you scroll down to the message.

I appreciate you looking into this. Everything seems to be working as expected.

P.S.
I'd suggest writing some quick and dirty automated tests that run on the weekends. The SQL Server Profiler[^] can be used to detect those timeouts.

Yep, This one[^] posted 448+ posts spams so far with in 1st day.

In order to prevent spammers from flooding the message boards, should there be a time limit between messages. For example 1 message per minute until 1000 points reached or something similar?

Any post repeated 5 times with less then 3 sentences and a URL should be suspect too.

I can live with 1 message / minute and I have more than 1000 points

Strongly agree. Mine was 8th report on this[^]. And that spammer was posting massive posts after my report.
One more suggestion:
If 5(or more) Protectors report a spammer, we should restrict the spammer to post & remove account.

@chris-maunder
I cam across something last night and this morning I tried again while at work and it is still happening so I wanted to share with you and see if you can figure out on your end what's happening.
As the title says, the bookmark button is missing but let me elaborate a bit more on what I mean. I suspect the addition of the "award badge" is somehow breaking responsiveness of the page and might be neutering the button somehow but I won't assume.
Let's just use the link in question, so we have a POC to work with. Using SQLite in C#/VB.Net [^]
As you can see here, the bookmark button is missing. I am giving you multiple widths to help visualize the responsive part I mentioned.
First (1600x)
Notice on the right, you have the printer button, no bookmark and the award badge below it.
Second (~<800x)
Notice, still no bookmark and now the award badge is gone (and you have a horizontal scrollbar introduced).
Third (~>800x)
Notice, the badge comes into view with the horizontal scrollbars and still no bookmark. At approximately 896px width, the scrollbar disappears and the badge is fully visible.
So I decided to do an inspect element and see what it has in the DOM, code wise. It looks like the bookmark "element" is there but not quite properly constructed
I may very well be wrong about this, but my initial thought is that somehow the responsive coding for the page is being broken by the presence of the badge, and it is somehow causing the bookmark element to not be properly showing up. My anecdotal evidence for this is that when looking at an article without the badge, the bookmark button shows up fine and works as intended. NOTE: I just tested this and now it doesn't show up on ANY article, including any of the ones already on my bookmark list or picking at random off the top/latest article list.
Unless the behavior to have that option show up has changed to depend on some other action, it is not there anymore (despite traces of the code showing up in the DOM). What I mean by that is, maybe you require people to rate it before bookmarking it? I highly doubt you would make that mandatory or did that, but just thinking out loud. Let me know if I can provide anything else.
PS. On a somewhat unrelated but related matter, the menu issue seems to have resolved on the front end, I like how the flyout now has that small inline spinner and then expands nicely out to the side, no more hiding the original menu and no longer showing up broken like before. However, the doubletaptogo error still appears in the console, whatever you are doing there, excellent. Let me know when you are done with it and I will give it a more thorough look and give you feedback on it.
PPS. Apologies on any typos or grammar issues, I am about to step into a meeting and didn't have time to go back reread everything like I normally do. So everything is typed as I thought it
