I was just browsing the suggestions, and noticed that there are frequent requests for "this or that" forum. Has The Code Project ever considered an area for User Defined Forums? (or some such hodgepodge) I'm sure there would be many ramifications with this, but it is a thought.

Here's why:

About 18 months ago someone posted my (and some other CPians) email addresses on a public forum under the subject "People I hate" - probably someone we argued in The Soapbox with. Luckily for me, it was an old email address, but I'll wager that the enormous amount of spam that address gets nowadays is probably related to this childish behaviour. If email addresses are removed from the mails you send when replying to a post, then this situation could be avoided in future.
Thoughts?

How can you be sure that the email address was taken from the codeproject?

It may just be a coincidence, but at least 18 of the people on the list I recognise as CPian's.

Interesting Idea Rob, and I can see why you want it. But on the other hand...
A few months ago, I sent you some Java books, and you sent me a STL book. We sorted that out off site, getting each others email addresses from CP post's. We wouldn't be able to do that sort of thing if CP didn't include the senders email address. Just something to consider.
How's the Java course going by the way?

True, but thanks to some childish individual, my old email account is getting hundreds of spam messages a day - if I were still using it, I'd be mighty upset. Tough call, but I'm sure Chris and co. could come up with something.

Very well thanks! Got 99% for my first assignment, and I am just about to submit my second. Coming from a C++ background, it isn't hard to pick Java up. It will get more interesting later on in the course though, once I start learning more about the language and the various helper classes (collections, etc.).

It will be nice if an option is provided for the user to have a filter on the questions posted by him/her.It will be easy to locate the answers for the questions otherwise seaching is very dificult.

Hi,
I found a big security threat in codeproject.com
Please mail me on savan_thakkar@rediffmail.com to know the details.
Thanks & Regards,

If you were smart enough to find a big security threat in codeproject.com, why would you post your email address in plain text for spammers?
|
|
|
|

may be he was talking to Chris and he did not wanted to post the problem in the forum for everyone to read,
Probably Chris will be interested no matter how it comes.

Can you do anything about accounts used only for advertising of commercial products, thus spamming a forum?
Like this one:
http://www.codeproject.com/script/comments/all_comments.asp?mode=all&userid=2404033
I didn't bother the first time but the company seems determined to repost their ads every couple of months. I understand that companies need to advertise their products. But as long as I don't post in their forums saying "hey guys, you can have the same for free at codeproject" I expect them to stay out of article forums unless they have something to say related to the article.
I guess the next time I will download their evaluation product benchmark it against mine and publish the results with full details and on the article. This could indeed be fun.

Ingo

What's up with searching message boards? It's painfully slow leading to non-use, leading to re-posts etc.
I just searched for the phrase "tape backup" in the lounge within the first four months of this year and it took as long as it took to type this message out to find it.
I can't imagine why it's taking more than 1 second for that type of search unless the search is implemented as some sort of brute force searching through the actual messages?
If that's the case, why not break and index every message as it's posted or modified into a dictionary and index table in the database and search that table instead?
This would reduce the search time by many orders of magnitude.
