I thought I'd toss another mail into Chris's inbox whilst he was away. How about doing a simple search/replace during the process of submitting a post which would translate CodeGuru pseudo-tags into real HTML tags? Like, replace [code] with <pre> and [/code] with </pre> and so on.

Why would anyone use [code] tags? Do they do that in CodeGuru. And will this automatic replacement, help former codeguru-posters to post here easily? Is this suggestion to make the transition easier. I am not a former codegur-guy like the rest of you. I am a native CPian. Born here, grew up here. To me Codeguru is a just folk-lore. That's why I ask all these questions.

Yeah the [code] tags were big and a revolution when first used at CodeGuru.

Ah.. but I use [ and ] for brackets...
Well.. it would be a better way of doing things... so it's a good idea in my book

If the [ and ] brackets are replaced with HTML, my nick would suffer

Maybe we should rebel against this idea

Maybe, but then maybe I'll use { and } instead

That is probably a better idea then my one... ah well. At least I gave my two cents

I've got the code for that tucked away somewhere (a more extensive system than merely search and replace) but why? For use in 'No HTML' messages? As an alternative method?

So that people who are used to CG, and don't know or forget that CP doesn't use [] pseudo-tags, will have their post appear the way they intended.

Has this ever been a problem (I've not seen [pre] used but I'll certainly add it if it's a common issue)

I wouldn't call it a problem, more like a "nice to have". I've seen people occasionally use [code] and [/code], and how tough would it be to switch that to <pre> and </pre> during the submission process?

Why not just add some buttons to the form to wrap the selected text in <pre> or <code> tags? You could also do a replace on &, < and > to replace with &, < and >, to make it easier to post code samples.
EG:
<script language='javascript' type='text/javascript'>
<!--
function formatSel(txt, tag) {
var tr;
if (document.selection.type.toLowerCase() == 'text') {
tr = document.selection.createRange();
var pe = tr.parentElement();
if (!(pe.tagName.toLowerCase() == 'textarea' && pe.id == txt.id))
tr = txt.createTextRange();
}
else
tr = txt.createTextRange();
var cont = tr.text;
cont = cont.replace(/&/ig,'&');
cont = cont.replace(/</ig,'<');
cont = cont.replace(/>/ig,'>');
cont = '<' + tag + '>' + cont + '</' + tag + '>';
tr.text = cont;
}
function markPre() {
formatSel(document.MessageForm.ContentText, 'pre');
}
function markCode() {
formatSel(document.MessageForm.ContentText, 'code');
}
</script>

Hi Chris,
Your rules that the status of a member will automatically be updated.
More specifically, the part where a membership should be promoted to
the next level after each year of membership.
Well, mine is still in the same old status,
even after more than 1 yr of membership.
Can u check up the scripts handling this ?
|
|
|
|
|
If you look over the (slightly convoluted) rules you'll see your status is correct.
cheers,
Chris Maunder

LOL
I am wondering whether I should write a 6 part article that explains how the membership status is calculated.

I'm throwing away the old system and will introduce a new system that allows you to control each other's levels.
This will be interesting
