Chris Maunder wrote: Does this help solve the issue of not being able to refer to answers by number? Yes, thanks, it definitely solves that issue.
There is now another issue. Take a look at this: http://www.codeproject.com/Questions/195819/vtable-and-virtual-pointer.aspx[^]
I just voted Solution 2 a five. This means it is now top-rated, and at the top of the list on the Top Rated tab. OK so far. If you look at the Most Recent tab, Solution 2 is also at the top of that list. This makes sense, OK? Now, the issue is, there's no way to view the Solutions in ascending numerical order.
There are two ways to fix this:
1. Throw up another tab (I think the term "throw up" will give you a hint about what I think of this).
2. Get rid of both tabs; just show one list, with a Sort by: combobox at top; the entries will be:
Top Rated
Oldest First
Latest First
[This setting should be persisted; I think one setting for all Q&A forums is enough; YMMV .]
Problem solved, much less clutter.

I don't think they are quite working right, the numbers look wrong.
It's the 2nd of May, 18:15 GMT, and these are the figures at present:
Top Experts in the last 24hrs
SAKryukov (780)
Ashishmau (276)
Ankit Rajput (250)
Top Experts this month
SAKryukov (334)
OriginalGriff (245)
S Mewara (158)
How can SA have got more points in the last 24Hrs, than he did totalled in the last two days?
I can't believe he got univoted that heavily - I don't think I've seen any of his posts with a single univote yet!

The issue is that we cache the values at different times. Once a day for the monthly, once an hour for daily. Things can get weird at the beginning of the month so I'll adjust.

I should have thought of that!

I know I often come here to bitch & moan, but I just wanted to thank you for the effort that went into dumpster-diving for the download counts.
In particular I appreciate the 5 points being credited for each download. I've often thought that while it is the forums that give us a sense of community, it is the articles that continually draw in new members. So I think that 5 points is a fair and well-deserved reward, given the time and care it takes to write a good article.

Thanks for the thumbs-up.
They might be premature, though, because 5 points a download is leading to some excessive points and will be reduced to 1 points a download. Sorry.

I was quite suprised to see my rep had recently increased to platinum in the Author category without me submitting anything new, although I wasn't far away before. A look at my rep history suggests this is mainly due to numerous downloads of source etc from my articles.
Is this a retrospective fix being applied or someone/something crawling CP and downloading whatever they can?

You now get five points for each download of your articles' source code, as well as for each bookmark that is made (by a user other than yourself).
I noticed I had 33 downloads this morning all in a row, starting at about 4:45 central time. Since CP doesn't tell you what article's file was downloaded, I don't know what articles were downloaded, but it looks as if someone is scraping the site. Maybe CP needs to add an "I am a human" check to keep the bots from doing this.

Nice to know it's not just me
There have been 138 downloads from my postings since April 27. And I only have two articles!

You need to be a member to access the downloads. If you try and download without be logged in, it takes you to log in page.
Is that not the human check?

I mean implement a captcha system for EACH download, that requires user input before the download is permitted. Anyone can create a bot account and start downloading the files, just by doing a web request and parsing the article's page. IMHO, not implementing such a system allows undue load to be placed on the servers.

Surely you meant to write "undue load ..."
Besides that I'm with you with the captcha thing.

I would be puzzled when a site that is all about sharing knowledge and code would start using CAPTCHAs.

Why that Luc?
Would your article crawler suddenly stop working?

It's all about sharing knowledge and code with other individuals, not about allowing other sites to simply scarpe off the code and call it their own, which happens with increaing reularity.

I'm not in favor of other sites copying CodeProject material, even when it is freely available, if that would result in CP being less successful or even at risk; and I know CP has been sending letters and taking legal action against sites that try to steal its content.
If some technical measures have to be taken, I suggest CP comes up with something less intrusive for the normal members. Here is my initial suggestion: If a user has hardly any reputation points, and is trying to download an item less than a minute after a previous download, then that one could be CAPTCHA-protected.

Probably a task running through the log files. For the existing download counts.
BTW the download counts are not for all-time it seems. They don't seem to have logs for the early years

And what has this got to do with the fact that so many articles are being downloaded in a short amount of time? Like I stated, I don't know *what* articles are being downloaded because the rep history doesn't specify that (as I think it should).

Chris has corrected me already but my initial assumption was that a task runs through the log files and for every download in the log, it inserts a rep entry (inefficient as it sounds, it seemed to me to be an accuracy measure). But anyway that was not it.
