Many times a post becomes too large because the person wants to include some code to illustrate his/her point (or question).
Just like emails, where you can attach a file to contain extra information, if such a feature could be added to CodeProject when someone posts a message, that would leave the message itself clean, clear and uncluttered from code. Then clicking on the attached file, the reader could then see the code the person posted.
It doesn't have to be code; it could be screen shots or just anything extra that could assist with what the poster is talking about.

you can do this as long as the poster has somewhere to upload the files too. with so many people using the forums, a HUGE amount of disk space would be required to save the uploads if they were to be uploaded to CP.

Damn right. I don't think Bob wants to be next on the RIAAs hitlist somehow, and I somehow think it would cause you no end of headaches.
Plus it would probably send your bandwidth bill skyrocketing.

Chris - Take a look at dasBlog's Add Entry stuff - it has a WYSIWYG entry editor (that can be switched to the HTML mode we know and love).
Worth doing here? Means you could probably dispense with the preview button, because you could format your post and see what it looks like straight off.

Too funny! Actually, I think a WYSIWYG editor would be nice.

Why do you think I used BlogX, then dasBlog instead of writing my own, like every other developer on the planet You lot might like to torture yourselves, but I'll keep my back welt-free
(Actually, it's because I'm far too busy playing Otogi and Vice City, and going to rehersals for a play I'm in, to spend my spare time writing blog code :-P)

Ok, ok, i'm as lazy as any other programmer, i understand where you're coming from.
Still, i'd rather see enhancements that make it easier to do things like post code, or leave quick responses (without reloading the page), or check spelling. It's not like CP is really suffering right now from people who can't figure out how to make text bold or italic or use Big Pink Fonts .
(AFAIK, there *is* a WYSIWYG editor in the submission wizard. But i guess this makes sense, considering it may discourage articles submitted in WordHTML™ )

That's an important thing - give then an HTML editor to format their docs, and they'll format them. If you don't chances are high that at least 3/4 of them will not format them correctly.

Well, lesse, formatting in posts... IMHO, this is a well-formatted CP post:

Ah, yes - i've looked at the code, and it's a simple fix in the call to MessWithUser() . The corrected code will read:
if ( Date.Now() < Date(1,1,2001) )
UserMgr.MessWithUser(UserMgr.gently);
else
UserMgr.MessWithUser(UserMgr.roughly);
Change that, and you should be fine.
In paragraph #1 above, formatting is handled (using IE) by the Quote button - the user needs know no more than how to select text.
In paragraph #2, indication of a code element is achieved using <code> tags. This can be done by hand or by the formatting toolbar below.
In paragraph #3, the less than symbol ( < ) should be escaped ( < ). This is also available by hand or by the toolbar.
So #1 is dirt simple in today's CP; #2 is something not done enough, but easy to do if you care. #3 is a PITA if you're pasting code - here is where CP could use some improvement. Adding a "Paste Code" next to the "Quote" button for instance.

So - there is a "Do not treat <'s as HTML tags checkbox. I can certainly add a "do not treat < in CODE segments as HTML.
Alternatively using the current WYSIWYG editor in the message composition page is 2 seconds work. The issue is one that was raised by, I think, yourself: The practice of using crazy silly HTML where it's simply not needed. (HTML masterbation was the term you used, I think ).
MAybe we need a vote on it. 5 for "add WYSIWYG", 1 for "Don't add WYSIWYG"
I'm really digging a grave for myself here.

How hard would it be to throw a little yes/no poll at the top of the programming forums for a week? Or perhaps in a sidebar on the posting page?
